Cartoon
I'm Trying to take this picture and make it look like a cartoon. I have followed and read lots of toutorials on it but they never come out right. The method I used here is find edges and photocopy then multiply. Does any one else know a better way?

Re: Cartoon
When you say 'cartoon', do you mean comic strip or the Disney style?

Re: Cartoon

Well here's an attempt at it.

A multi-stage approach

Duplicate the Unsharp Masked original. Select Blur > Smart Blur set to edges only a threshold of about 30 and radius of about 2 pixels. Invert this to create a black outlined image and set it to Soft Light. Duplicate this image and set it to Darken. Create a New Document and paste in the original image and increase the Image Size to 150 dpi and add Pixelate > Colour Halftone set to a Radius of 8 pixels and all the other values set to 90 - this create the image as a printed half-tone pattern that most cartoons were printed in (rhetro look). Reduce the Image Size back to 72 dpi and cut and paste into the previous document and set the blending mode to Soft Light.

Create a another layer from the original layer and add Sketch > Charcoal Thickness 2, Detail 5, Light/Dark Balance 50 set this layer to Overlay. Finally create another layer from the original and place it above all the other layers and set to Lighten.

Then when your happy Merge Visible the image and create a new layer above filled with white, set it to Screen and with a black brush paint on the white filled layer to reveal your image below and give a painted effect.

It's not perfect but it's was just something I knocked together in about 10 minutes of playing about

Re: Cartoon
Names have been changed to protect the innocent.....

John-Bob, do you mean something like this or is it not realistic enough? I just made new layers above the original, drew the outline then squinted at the picture to see tonal differences and using different layers built up the image from that using simplified shapes drawn with a hard edged brush (you could even draw them with the pen tool, change the paths to selections and fill if you wish)

Back ground was a gradient then filter - Pixelate - colour halftone radius 4 all the other settings to 130 - ok and bingo!

Nice work Glen! Very Lichtenstein.

Maiden - I think what you said sums things up for a lot of us, I sometimes forget that there are some things which need to be done manually and spend hours trying to automate it

Thanks for all the comments everyone. Much appreciated

MJ - I don't do tutorials, simply haven't the time really - follow the instruction and it should work only you may have to play about with the radius setting in colour halftone depending on the resolution of your starter image, if its not how you want it a quick 'undo' works wonders !

Anyhow, can you imagine a screenshot of the part when I squinted at the image (now there's a Friday challenge !!)

It's a style of what they refer to as vectors but not necessarily using true vectors. When I wish to use this style I opt for the pen tool in Photoshop or even open the image in Flash and use Flash's drawing tools as they will give true vectorised blocks of colour. I might put together a tutorial on this technique. This is one I did of Brian Blessed the very loud actor from Flash Gordon the Movie

Re: Cartoon
cool maiden.... I used your technique Glen but I did one thing different. I Used Poster edge and then traced the different color shapes with pen tool. Same thing you did but I used PS to cheat at finding the different colors
heres mine
