You never know what you will find in an attic. Looks like I could use Photoshop to restore this photo. Of course, that would be if I hadn't just spent hours upon hours getting it to look this way! PS: Yes, more basset hounds! ![]() |

Re: Contest 62: Show me the treasure
Another week of fantastic entries - and good to see some more newcomers weighing in on this one. First entry came from MJ, with a neatly opened lid stuffed with blankets and, for some reason, my mugshot. (Damn, why do I always crop up in these images?) The grass masks the bottom of the chest well, if perhaps a little spikily, but I feel a lack of shadow there which would have made it sit on the ground better. And I'm sure the inside of the lid could have had more attention! Well done keeping the latches intact on the lid, though - good observation. There's obviously a hidden code in Glen's montage that, frankly, leaves me baffled. Is Dan Brown in on this one? But meanings aside, it's a great technical job - look at the detail in those shadows (such as the way the skeleton's shadow goes up the side of the chest) and the consistency of lighting angle. There's a real thickness to the chest lid, too, and great shading inside it. Love the 3D specs, just wish I could work out why they're there… Always good to welcome a new reader, and CaraDunn has given us an interesting thread elsewhere this week. I really like the composition, idea and sense of fun in this one - and you must really have struggled with those incredibly tricky reflections! My only real criticism here is about perspective (yes, that again). The angles of the top and bottom front edges of the chest set the vanishing points, which then show the horizon level - far, far lower than you have it: ![]() It's a tricky one to get right. If you have the third edition, be sure to check out Chapter 6! Looks like Glen's skeletons have escaped from his image and invaded BobbyJo's. A well removed lid- taking it off completely, rather than hingeing it back, enabled you to move it without redrawing its perspective. Neat cheat! The shadow from your front skeleton seems a little two-dimensional, though. Especially where it's being cast on thin air! Like the addition of the treasure, it really livens it up. Setting the horizon doesn't mean placing everything below it, as rufus has shown in his expertly composed image. Great sheaves and rolls of paper, very neatly tied red tape, and a thoroughly convincing inside lid on the chest. And the second version, with the palm tree shadow, is simply fantastic (although I'd have offset the shadow inside the lid). It's only been a couple of weeks, Rufus, but you're already giving us artwork to live up to! An artfully removed lid from mguyer, and a very well chosen surrounding for it. As I've said above, though, there's a perspective problem here. This time, it's not with the background - which is well placed - but the coins. Photographed head-on, they flatten the image, detracting from the realism. If you have CS2, you can use Mesh Warp to distort each pile: ![]() Otherwise, it's back to the old rotate and Shear technique. Makes all the difference! Gorgeous piece of work from Tabitha this week - fantastic colour matching in this one. A bit of shadow beneath the lion's paws would have been great, here - and perhaps darkening the whole chest a little more, since it's so strongly backlit. Cats again, though… I just hope your posts never come next to cwbasset's, or you may find your tabbies being chased by his hounds… Glad that Kenny managed to figure out how to post in the end! And it was well worth the wait. A great reconstruction job: the angles and perspectives on the lid work perfectly, the inside is artfully constructed from pieces of the front, especially the sides, made from pieces of banding off the front. But wait - the outside of the lid is curved, whereas the inside has a flat roof. Come on, everybody! I know where the treasure's hidden! Great sand burial from Born2Run, a really convincing job. I really go for this alternative opening technique, especially the thoughtfully provided handle that enables us to pull it open! And a great book lodged in there, too. This filing cabinet approach is a really refreshing take on the problem, with a good sense of thickness to the drawer front and a well judged background. It would be irritating if I mentioned the slightly odd angle of the handle, so I won't. Welcome to the forum, both of you! And here's cwbasset with his basset hounds again. On closer inspection, I don't think they'd be much of a match for tabitha's felines, especially this week. Great texture, good cracking on the photograph. and above all a really neat composition of the chest into the household scene. But do you think that the photo frame is, perhaps, a little too well preserved? Software pirates, ha ha! Somehow, maiden always seems to cut straight to the gag. Which, frequently, makes us overlook her extraordinary Photoshop skills: that lid has been perfectly opened, the inside artfully drawn, the sand burying it neatly. Incidentally did you know that September 19th is International Talk Like A Pirate Day? I think I'm going to regret mentioning that… A fantastic second piece from kenny, full of drama and a rather curious approach to the intricacies of the food chain. I can't figure out if the salmon was there in the original background - I suspect it was, but it's a mark of your skill that I'm not certain! And we end up with Paul McFadden's treatment of Einstein D Kid. For those who have joined recently, EDK was a regular visitor here who, although only 13, managed to befuddle us all. Come back, Einstein! We've missed you! For those who are interested, this was how the original job that inspired this Challenge ended up: ![]() |

Re: Contest 62: Show me the treasure
dont you just love hidden codes ? As I had used the 3D transform tool to open the lid ( and therefore given me a bottom plane to work from) I thought the glasses were a good hint (although I may have lost the plot a bit by then) - ah well, back to stating the obvious then! and Paul...... I was nowhere near him - honestly (and even if I were there do you think I'd have left the lid open? - no way!) Great work this week y'all _________________ minds are like parachutes - they only work when they are open |

Re: Contest 62: Show me the treasure
September 19th, yer say? Yarr, I be knowing this already thankee for yer kind reminder ![]() BTW - hot news just in... I've purchased a a new digital camera (shock, horror, probe) A shop display model Nikon D70 (not the newer D70s) but a fine DSLR nonetheless. This is a shock because I had originally set my eye on the Canon 350D, then had my head turned by the Fujifilm S9500 (not a DSLR but still great) and finally in a strange turn of events to end up buying the Nikon D70 at a substantial price reduction: £525 plus (as I'm clumsier than a juggling unicycling tortoise with a hearing impediment) insurance against breakages. _________________ mad as a badger and twice as furry |
