Re: Contest 75: Turkey trimming
Thanks George. As for what you were saying regarding Steve's insight into the colour cast of skin tones etc. I gave it some thought and came up with the notion that if you copy & paste the two items you are trying to match into new seperate documents you can then use Photoshop's Histogram feature to work out the tonal distribution of the seperate colour channels.

Click on the Histogram tab on the Navigator palette or chose Window>Histogram from the menu.

Then click on the fly-out button and select "All Channels View".

Firstly examine the the tones in the item of who's tones you want to recreate - noting where the peaks and dips are.

Then click on the item you wish to change Ctrl-M to bring up the Curves dialogue box then using the drop down window select the different channels by colour and match them as best you can to the original images tones. As the Histogram has a live preview you can see where the peak and dips go by adjusting the curves.

Also keep an eye on both the documents and try to match by eye too. When you're happy with the match save the Curve which you can then apply to the original artwork and get a truly good match.

I hope this helps, I will be using this method myself from now on and see what progress I make out of it.

Wow!! ... Some brilliant entries already this week and a great credit to you Steve ... You should be very chuffed ... I have deifinitley seen dramatic improvements in my own work since getting your book although I think I need to work through some more of your tutorials to 'compete' with some of these images ... I know, I know ..... it's not a competition ... but everyone likes to do their best don't they?

P.S I showed you book to a tutor at my college and he was really very impressed ... he says he's going to recomend it to ALL his Photoshop students ... Commission please (Joke)

Thanks again Steve for a great book and a great site

Re: Contest 75: Turkey trimming
hey, well here's my entry, I must say it's the most feeble looking turkey I've ever seen! Hopefully now that i've granted them freedom they'll start to perk up a bit!!!

George i think your Frankenstein entry is just brilliant.

The lenghts Steve goes trough to get his turkey....
As I have a thing with matte painting (which is frustrating as I can't paint) and compositing I went for this . King Kong seems to be everywhere so I just had to....
Just wanted to concentrate on getting the colors etc. right.

George , brilliant stuff, and the thing with "going for the eagle" is hilarious ! Thanks Maiden for the histogram info....very interesting.
Like your picture too.

PS. I know the wings are too long but I felt the effect wasn't the same when I made them shorter.

Tom turkeys have longer beards and more tail feathers. This one is a Queen.

Here is mine, not terribly imaganitive. The eagle was alive and well at the time the picture was taken and now I have him hanging out with a fattened turkey.

So far so good, the disguise had worked and he'd slipped past the guards back at the farm quite easily. Leon knew now that if he kept his head down he might, just might, survive Christmas.....
