Nice David.

Steve won't have to go back to tell me that my main window shadow is skew. It keeps staring back at me...lol.

Michael! Brilliant work! I thought you were stuck in a rut. Now you have produced something really worth five stars! Well done!

You don't really need to model it in the full sense Dennis. Just create it as a flat 2D cut out in a 3D environment. It will still throw a proper shadow ... or near enough anyway.

Here's my entry... ha, ha, ha...

I keep waiting for the squeaky sound effect Michael. I can hear it visually!

I was hesitant to post this because it shows just how appallingly crude and basic my 3D is.

The top view shows the simple flat lamp cutout used to create a shadow. I worked on the assumption that all the curls in the support bracket were circular and scaled the rest from this assumption. The blue rectangle is a reference shape representing a person on the ground and their shadow. This was used to determine a sun position from existing shadows of people in the image.

The lower view shows the camera angle that I used to export the simple 2D image from which I extracted the shadow.

But 'pride and falls' and all that leads me to fear that all this 'science' may prove to be entirely empty.

Re: Challenge 912: Polish my lamp
Congratulations to everyone who entered this tricky technical Challenge. It may not have offered as many opportunities for creativity as some, but it is a good test of your skills – both Photoshop and observational.

A few general points:

1. Anything that’s vertical in an object needs to be vertical in its shadow. The slight tilt in the shadow of this lamp is because the lamp itself is hanging very slightly at an angle.

2. Applying a little Gaussian Blur to the shadow is a good idea. But the amount of blur needs to increase with distance from the bracket. The best way to achieve this is to turn the shadow into a Smart Object, apply the blur, then use the Gradient tool to mask the blur near the bracket.

3. Glass has substance. It casts a shadow.

4. From our viewpoint, the bracket is foreshortened but the lamp, being round, isn’t. You need to bear this in mind and distort the two shadows independently.

________

First to enter the shadowland this week was DavidMac, with an image that’s strikingly close to the real thing. See points 3 and 4 above. The second entry corrects both of these errors. I enjoyed the third entry, with its night view. But surely the shadow cast by the illuminated lamp should be directly below it, on the pavement, rather than on the wall? Useful to see the 3D model: yes, I think it does get the point across well.

A lengthy shadow from dwindt, neatly placed. See points 1, 2 and 3 above, although you correctly dealt with point 4. I really like the fact that you’ve troubled to remodel the lamp in the second entry. Very close, and a whole box of Romeo y Julieta. A fun night time third entry, although whoever installed that lamp really needed to put in a stronger bulb. On a side note, I’m amazed that after 912 Challenges this is the first one to have the simple file name “night.jpg”.

A sideways shadow from Ant Snell, but see points 2, 3 and 4 above. Top marks for the added Psycho poster, and indeed the knife-wielding shadow: it’s really added a new dimension to the image.

A wide shadow from Frank, correctly dealing with points 1, 2 and 4 above. But do give your glass at least a little transparency!

A powerful cleanup from Mariner, who has removed the original people and replaced them with a distinctly shady character leaning against the wall and his paramour above. Splendid patching, and I’m amazed at how you extended the image on the left to add a pristine version of those painted signs. Now if you can just get rid of the netting over the staircase…

An extended shadow from tooquilos, but do take note of point 4 above. Is that a drone shot at the start of the animated version, or a 3D model? I like the man reading, but do have to take issue with the lamp - when the light comes on the shadow really needs to change.

Outstanding work from michael sinclair, who has animated a swinging lamp with real ingenuity. And I like the fact that the lamp has been regilded. Removing the people is a task of Mariner proportions - but the decision to use grass rather than match the perspective of the tiled floor was a good call. And a fun second entry - are you applauding yourself?

_____________

Good work, everyone. And here’s the big reveal. When I patched the wall to remove the shadow, I also replaced the original lamp with one that didn’t have the shadow behind it. Of course, the original lamp was itself lit from the side, otherwise it couldn’t have cast this shadow.

Thanks Steve. I like to be challenged like that as it makes for an interesting blend of observation and analysis and plain old instinct.

I wasn't really concentrating on the accuracy of this so much as the mood. You are quite right I have the shadow far, far too high on the wall. But, if you look at the shadow cone, I think it would still strike the wall but lower down. Probably around door height.

Thanks Steve I really enjoyed playing with this one.

Something odd going on withe new challenge. The Forum index shows a new challenge "The Road Beneath", but when I open the challenge index it opens to "Polish My Lamp". Reloading the page doesn't change this.

Fixed. I'd forgotten to make it a sticky post so it ended up buried way down the list.
