*unfinished - sorry* Oh dear. Photoshop crashed. I usually save my work as I go but not this time, so this is an unfinished screengrab of what I was working on when it locked up... Hope you all have a happy Christmas. ![]() |

I was trying to capture a Southern Californina version. There's lots of snow, but you got to go up to the mountains to get it. This Merc has a little left. Perhaps it made it as far as Santa Monica. Depends on the weather. Had to flop the image so the car would be parked legally. I'd like to thank Steve for this gem of a web site. Happy holidays all. ![]() |

Re: Contest 25: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow
Morning, everyone. First of all, my apologies to those of you who found their pictures disappearing from the forum. It all began when I pressed the Reset All command while trying to change the background to snow yesterday. Several hours of feverish swearing later, I got everything back to normal. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! Some really great montages this week. The main thing is, you've all learnt how to do snow and ice! And as well as the settled stuff, there have been some inspired goes at snowfalls. MJ got in first, with some really touchable snow and great icicles. Not sure about the snowstorm in your second entry, but the decorations in the windows are certainly an improvement! I especially like the bare path leading up to the door - great touch. John-Bob, your entry made me laugh out loud. Excellent snowstorm, and the quality of the cheap decorations is fantastic! Love those rope lights and the tacky Christmas tree. Very nicely observed, and well understated. Apart from the great gag, and the fine Dickensian characters, maiden's entry shows a great attention to detail. Best thing about it, for me, is the quality of the light coming from inside the building: you've achieved a real rosy glow there, which is exactly what I'd hoped for. Very fine snow effects, too! David Asch has produced some great flying snow here, and the footprints on the pavement (sidewalk?) work well. Great tinsel, and a rather lonely Father Christmas outside who looks like he could do with a bottle of festive cheer! BobbyJo, welcome to the Challenge. A great first attempt: the footprints in the snow are immaculate, and the worn-away snow on the steps works really well. Perhaps slightly too much of a pink tinge overall: but a fine first go. Come back soon! A good Christmas card from uk2usadaz, with a particularly good display of falling snow. The yellow glow from the windows is a nice touch, but what's it doing under the windows? Or are those light beams coming from huge, powerful yellow spotlight positioned an infinite distance inside the room? Like the holly, though! Chris Pucci has turned in a highly accomplished day-for-night scene, with plenty of nice touches - the sledge, the shovel (good shadow behind it, Chris), the tree and the cleared path. Your orange glow inside the rooms has perhaps a little too much green in it, which makes the building look like it's full of some caustic liquid. But hey, the thought is there! Perfect lighting conditions make Glen's post come to life. The two doormen are so well integrated into the scene it's hard to believe they weren't there on the original! Hard to make out what that solitary Young Farmer is doing in there - some kind of fertility dance? But that window's a really strong focal point. Great stuff. Not sure about the icicles, African, but you're the only one to have thought of using real snow outside the building - and it works a treat. The condensation on the windows, and the hand print in particular, are nice touches. What's impressed me about so many of your posts is the natural way the snow lies on the surfaces. This is particularly noticeable in Paul McFadden's entry, with a really naturalistic approach that looks totally convincing. Every horizontal surface has its own covering of snow, in just the right proportion. It's hard to get this right, so more praise when it's done properly! A fine Christmas extravaganza from Brian Garrison, complete with Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim. Some great innovations here: the Dickensian frontage added to the shop next door, the heavy Victorian curtains with Scrooge lurking behind. but follow the eyeline from head-height down the street, and you do wonder why Cratchitt's on his knees… Tweaknik, we all suffer from computer crashes, which is what David Asch is for. Sorry you couldn't get finished - thanks for showing us your work in progress. Hope your PC recovers soon. The Californian approach from Jeff Scranton is a great way to end this challenge. As for flipping the scene so the car's legally parked, what a hoot! And I really like the remnants of snow on the car. A really nice joke, perfectly explained. Excellent work, all of you! You may now take Christmas off. But if you're really bored, one more challenge awaits… |
