Very well Herr Macdonald if that's the way it's going to be...

Thank you, Gordon. I forgot to add the balcony supports so I am constructing them now. If they work I will add them later today.

Delightful Michael--I expected no less from you!

However, that balcony looks incongruous Do you want me to get the Imperial German Navy to sort it out for you...?

I must grant you a very fine and apt replacement Herr Sinclair. But, even allowing for subsidence, the immigrant German labour had a terrible sense of perspective.

Gordon I missed your amusing entry completely until now! I saw the Vimeo link and thought it was another in the chain of comments about Anna's Vimeo woes. And didn't check it properly. Made me head off in the wrong direction.

Michael (Mariner). For some reason I find the background more satisfying than the foreground. It looks much more convincing. Not sure why you quite so extensively 'restored' the cream houses, the only true Elizabethan part of Steve's original picture. But I do like the way you have opened it up and added the garden.

Re: Challenge 871: Shrewsbury rooftop
Frank that's a very clever solution to the balcony and stairs. I rather wish I had thought of that. Would have saved me a lot of work! I do like the stormy skies too.

Re: Challenge 871: Shrewsbury rooftop
First to climb the rooftops this week was lwc, with an intriguing set of backgrounds. I like the way they blend together, and they make an interestingly varied set. Perhaps the foreground should change colour with the different lighting?

A blazing building from tooquilos, which includes the room in which I was staying - together with my escape route. Shouldn’t there be a clapper on the bell, though? Great flames in the animated version, and I especially like the reflections in the window. The Elizabethan fireman is a real bonus! The only thing I’m not sure about is the way the large flame on the left is masked by the building. The random cutout looks a little false, especially when animated. Perhaps the mask should follow the shape of the window frame?

A grand new chimney - or, rather a grand old chimney - in GKB's entertaining animation, complete with a family of ghosts. I like the opened door, and the shimmering effect. That felt roof still seems rather too modern! The haunting (ha!) soundtrack provides a good sense of atmosphere.

An extraordinary rebuild from michael sinclair, filling the space beneath the roof with a fine array of Tudor buildings that very nearly match the rooftops. It’s a very un-Sinclair image, and all the better for the lack of explosions and German naval officers. Edit: Oops! I spoke too soon. And again. Oh, and again, although they are somewhat entertaining. I do rather like the way you blew up DavidMac’s chimney, although I’m not at all sure about your suggested replacement: a good enough chimney, but oh! That perspective!

A great reconstruction from DavidMac, with splendid new/old buildings and a rather fine balcony - and that somewhat slender rope is a neat addition. Is that really me on the right? Wouldn’t have recognised myself. Whoever he is, he doesn’t seem remotely bothered by the blaze behind him, and his lady friend seems equally unimpressed. “Certes”, though?

A classic entry from Frank, with all-old windows, walls and floor. Beautifully done, Frank. The only thing I’m going to pick you up on is the Fire Escape sign over the door: serif fonts weren’t used until the late Victorian era, and that one in particular wasn’t designed until the 1950s.

A fine rebuild from Mariner, with reconstructed Tudor buildings aplenty. The large cream-coloured building looks rather too new, though, don’t you think? Given the ageing of its roof? And If I were its owner I’d demand a door leading onto the garden, not least to break up that facade. I’m also a little concerned about the gardener, who has a curiously sharp method of joining hedges at corners. The two women do add a good human interest, though, and the balcony support is a very good addition.

Re: Challenge 871: Shrewsbury rooftop
Thanks Steve. The soundtrack is an Enya instrumental. Enya is an Irish singer who has a particularly lovely haunting voice and I quickly settled on using one of her tracks.

The ‘new’ chimney is, reputedly, a Tudor design which I thought would be nicer than what was there before.

You have really gone back in time with this week’s banner; I can’t even remember the tune. Was it ‘Spanish Flea?’

Thanks, Steve. I agree with everything you say. I was a bit short of time this week and the job I set myself was huge so, to sum up, "Could have done better".

Re: Challenge 871: Shrewsbury rooftop
Yes I got completely adrift with the people. There is a limited availability of photographs of early Elizabethans. It is you ..... but after Adobe's neural filters have been at work. Far from making you alarmed they made you completely camp! I was kind of stuck on the rails by then so I just posted even though the people didn't work.

The post was entitled "You must be joking Mr Caplin". Certes is Elizabethan english for surely. Thus "Surely you jest Mr Caplin!".

Poor jokes can sometimes be .....um......poor.

Thanks Steve.

Spanish Flea, indeed! Although there's some bizarre notation in bar 3 - that bottom D in the treble clef seems to be descending, but the stave lines are missing.

Could have done that, but then it would be a slideshow instead of an animation... Thanks Steve!
