Re: Contest 65: Elvis spotting
Ahhh Becky, forever the mediator ![]() Dont we have this discussion everytime this subject raises its ugly head? And unfortunatly we never seem to resolve it... I always thought this forum was here to encourage and stimulate photoshoppers into improving and understanding techniques to make realistic and workable montages? We are all here to help each other, and I personally love this site where there does not seem to be anyone who says "I'm better than you.. blah.. blah...blah!!", like many competition sites out there! Recently there has been an influx in new ENTHUSIASTIC members and three cheers to them all. No matter how long we have been members, we were all there once upon a time and maybe the etiquette of this site (like multiple entries to the Friday Challenge etc), comes with time. Maybe this is one of those challenges that encourages mulitple 'cut and paste' images, (although I have to add here that it would be nice to see some colour matching going on in most of them ![]() As a suggestion though, maybe it would be a useful tip to new comers to analyse and scrutinise their images before posting to ensure that things like colour matching etc are realistic enough so as to be a suitable entry as I can imagine Steve's bandwidth increasing to a phenominal size over the coming months as the popularity of HTCIPS #3 increases? ![]() _________________ "She had lost the art of conversation but not, unfortunately, the power of speech." Re: Contest 65: Elvis spotting
going back three weeks, the replies numbered 23, 21, 38 as compared to 60 already this week. It was just a few of us having a hoot with a fun subject None of us can take this Elvis and make him look real at Burger King, the British Museum, a dogshow or anywhere else. The trunk, the rot and the shoe (especially getting that trunk open) were a real challenge. This one kind of begs to just have some simple fun with it. |

Re: Contest 65: Elvis spotting
I tend to agree. OK, there have been a lot of multiple entries this week - but then the subject does lend itself to it. And hey, as long as everyone's enjoying themselves, that's really what it's all about! But rest assured, I'll come up with another tricky one for next week that will leave you all befuddled… |

The Elvis comeback figurine........ not many know he made three comebacks in total. One in '68, one in '77 and one just last week ! ![]() _________________ most of the lack of sunshine in our lives is caused by us standing in our own shadow |

Re: Contest 65: Elvis spotting
What a busy bunch you've been this week! Photoshop working overtime all round in a veritable frenzy of Elvis sightings. To make the round-up easier to read, I'm going to group the entries by contributor: mguyer was one of the prolific posters this week. The colour matching in the Mitchell Corn Palace image is good, and the shadow on the floor adds a lot of realism. But why is the street so empty? And why is he standing in the middle of the road? A little confused about this one. The Mt Rushmore and Nevada (I'm guessing) montages are… well… there was a post about plonking Elvis onto backgrounds, and I have to say these are a little lacklustre, Martin. The mountain top one is a cute idea, but the two montaged elements look rather faked! The Snow Removal montage was better, but the strong purple in the shadows on the truck look out of place here. Better composition in the Graceland Porch shot - but watch the scale! He's far too small! And surely, in the beach montage, when the water's that clear, we should be able to see his legs through it? I liked the two museum pieces, and the Underground one works well. But as for the Golders Green montage - why has Elvis got that soft outline? Do you always apply so much feathering to cutouts? Or is it to give it a ghostly impression? Good shadow in Tate Modern, though. I think the main point to be made from this profusion of montages is that simply placing someone in a scene isn't enough: you really need to pay attention to the colour balance more, to make the montaged images fit together in the scene. Think of the trouble you must go to matching shades when building a dental bridge, Martin, and imagine how it would look if you just plucked a mismatched tooth off the shelf! Working with out-of-focus originals is always tricky, yet Born2Run has managed to blend Elvis into his blurry scene rather well. Again, there's the hue problem - Elvis's face is much lighter than all those around him - but hey, it's a good gag, and we can forgive that! A really entertaining image from jwhite, with some good detailing - I liked the inclusion of the drawing pins (aka thumbtacks) holding the poster to the coffin lid - but, again, Elvis's face is the wrong colour for his body! Kind of throws out the whole image, don't you think? Lexus has obviously had far too much time on his hands this week. But with such good posts, we can't complain! The toilet image has been beautifully executed, with just the right tone in the reflections - well done, there. I liked the cycling shot, too, and the subtlety of the Burger King montage. Same colour matching problem in the New Look montage, but I do like the way all those people seem to be looking at him (although isn't his scale a little small there?). He seems to be falling over in the first Around Town image, and his shdow's a little strong in the second; but he fits well into the Alternative Kitchens window. Alternative Kitchens? What the hell's that shop name all about? Good fitting in the car showroom and game station montages, and I think I can just make out a distant guitar in the Where's Elvis montage. you've obviously had fun this week, Alex! Neal's also, clearly, not had enough real work to do this week. But with such great interaction in the montages, we should clearly be grateful! The two Bush montages are real clasics, and the colour matching and blurring in the concert shots are great (is that Noel Gallagher in the first one?). Great busker montage, and Elvis does fit in well behind that cheesy accordion player! The final image, however, is a fantastic piece of work: Elvis has been perfectly aged, and the streaks of light across him match the original exactly. Excellent! rufus has set himself a really tricky task, putting Elvis into that packaging. Each item works well, but I'm not sure of the shading where they overlap - should there, perhaps, be more distortion when looking through the edge of the plastic? Good detailing - I particularly liked the way we see the back of his hand on the reflections, and the fact that each carry strap has been drawn individually on the lids. But hey - why is Elvis $10.95, when I've been knocked down to just $2.95? Surely I deserve some rarity value??? A really good piece of work from CWBasset, with a great beam of light from the flying saucer, and a thoroughly convincing light spot on the ground. I liked the inclusion of the yeti and bigfoot - but no basset hounds this week? Or are they just too artfully concealed? Oh, hang on, there they are in the second montage - hound dog, yes, of course, it all makes sense. I do like the way that official is looking at Elvis, it really makes this one work well. Nice job. Elvish! Brilliant! Once again, maiden has given us the gag we need. Those tastefully Spocked ears, and especially the way he's tucked into the ferns, combine to make this a really great piece of work. And some fine green tinges to his face and clothing! Nice work, Becky! Looking at Pooch's montage, I feel the real skill here was in removing whoever was standing in the place now occupied by Elvis. Scale, composition and overall feel are just right - but, once again, it's the colour matching issue! Damn, I should have stressed this more in the book. It really does make a difference! Burger King crops up again (and how appropriately) in David Asch's entry, and it's a great one: removing the original chair and replacing it with one from the scene is a really neat touch. Even the skintones match! Yay! And the second montage, with teh Elvis model falling over on the table, is brilliant - especially like the blob of tomato ketchup on his head (even though he does seem to have switched his allegiance to McDonalds, and a Japanese McDonalds at that!). A great idea from kenny this week, and Elvis does fit well onto that lunar surface. The newspaper texture needs more folds and wrinkles in it, though - and you really need a wider choice of typefaces to make this one work! But a good shadow, and a good gag. Some great manipulation from BobbyJo, with a convincingly placed saxophone that fits both his mouth and his hand - that must have taken a lot of work. And the other hand gripping the mike stand is a really good addition! You have to admire the skill with which Elvis's body has been built up beneath where the guitar was - a very artful job. Placing Elvis outside Graceland is a great choice of location for NW Rain, and he really fits well in there. Best of all is the shadow, which bends perfectly up the gate and around the corner on the wall. A thoroughly convincing piece of work. It's rare that a forum entry makes me laugh out loud, but Glen's triptych really did it for me. A work of genius! bending the leks in the second image, building the skull and skeletal hands in the third - and, above all, the consistent lighting throughout, all combine to make a classic piece of work. All tied together neatly with the unified floor and background. Really great stuff, Glen! It's always kind of weird when I see myself in the entries, but Paul McFadden's shots of me asleep in bed have been beautifully realised. The skill of the lighting, closing my eyes, and the addition of the teddy bear are real classics. And the pairing in the second shot is a great one - even down to giving me access to the same stool (although I am concerned for my balance there). Funny, well executed, thoroughly original - it's enough to earn you your well-overdue title, Paul. Hmm, let me see… I think Dream Decryptor fits the bill for this week's entry! It's been a really well-subscribed week, and I'm glad you were all so inspired by the theme. Thanks for all the entries! |
