Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
So Kenney,
I got Adobe CS2 Classroom In A Book because it was highly recommended.
Haven't opened it, because it was my goal to read through the fat CS2 manual first.
Which I have not done yet.
From an artistic point of view, The Art Of Photoshop by Daniel Giordan is nice.
Got it, haven't read it.

Of course my list of PS books does not include the books I have on my OS and software.

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
Just a little comment on Paul's comment.

Don't let it get you down but get inspired by it and keep going. When I got Steve's book last October I didn't even really know what a layer mask or an Alpha Channel was, honest. I didn't have a clue how to properly composite and color match pictures. But I've been on a mission ever since and I still get frustrated with things. I'm quite happy with my entry this week but believe me, I didn't have a real clue how to start this one. I just knew I wanted that wave in there, found one on stockxchng and just fooled around with a layer mask and ooops....it worked. Then it was fine tuning and adding things. One thing just lead to another because it started to look right so I got more and more motivated. And the fact that it's a lowres pic helps because it hides mistakes more easily. The beauty of this forum is that it challenges you every week to solve problems and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't. There have been a few where I was totaly "lost for pixels" so to speak and didn't contribute a thing. And if you see something you like and don't know how to do it, just ask the person how it was done and try it out till it works for you. That's what this forum is here for isn't it?

And for "tank". Hi...I just cloned foam from other wave pics and scaled and erased until it all fitted. Trial and error really. As a final touch I painted a bit of it with a very small "grass" brush (you know which one I mean) to make it all fit a little bit more. But all the water in the picture including the wave comes from one photo which I painted in using a layer mask.

Thanks Stephan. I don't know why I didn't think of that method. Fantastic job on your submission.

Classroom In a Book is a great way to learn the software

But, for fun, and inspiration in equal parts, I have to say Bert Monroy's books are tops (after Steve's of course)

Surfs up!

Great challenge, and debate. This forum is a creative outlet for me. I enjoy participating and feel honored to be among an August group of artists.

And I hope Maiden gets her promotion to the advertising department real soon.

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
After reading all the comments about how good some members think they are ,or not, i thought i would have a go at this one just to prove we are not all photoshop experts (yet) but i am sure if we stick at it, we can only get better!
I cannot do water yet, so i thought i would have a go at some snow instead, found out i was no good at that either, so this is what i ended up with.
I hope that one day i can send in some work of the quality we are seeing here just lately, it not only gives inspiration but a goal to aim for, please keep up the good work, everyone.

Hi Jim.... a good place to start is Chapter 9 page 204 of Steve's book (HTCIP Third Edition... that's assumming you have the book???.

2 things:

1. Yes, I have the book.
2. I forogt about the water section.

And, after a few more days of thinking about it, I guess it doesn't seem as hard as I originally thought. Thanks for reminding me of that section, Dalton.

Thanks Chris. I'm happy I thought about it as I mostly try to do everything the hard way (not that I want to).

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
Neal that is fantastic you have got the foreground and background perspective to a tee. Excellent work.

Slim that just says it all about how some are good at one thing and others at something else. You said you cant do water and snow yet you've chosen to place yours in glass which I think is really difficult and made a superb job of it. Excellent distortion slim.

Thank you Chris!

I wish I deserved the praise, but once I dropped in the ocean and aligned the horizon lines, the perspective took care of itself.

Slim, you posted a terrific job. Try the water.

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
I'm really happy with my entry this week, and I have no doubt after looking back at my previous posts that overall my standard has improved most weeks. And I feel this is my best entry yet although i've never used so many layers before, must have been over 60 most of which were the tornado.

Think global warning has seriously affected Londons weather.

Wow, very nice Chris. Put my little twister to shame lol. did you paint tornado by hand, or blend it from a skeletal photo?
