I always use this gadget of mine. It allows me to see if the egg is fresh before cracking it. You never know what you can find inside... ![]() _________________ |

Re: Contest 104: Here we go again!
When I posted the first Friday Challenge two years ago, people were a little unsure what to make of it at first. The initial reaction was: Open an egg? Is that all? Nothing to it! But it's harder than it looks, as those who entered quickly found out. To begin with, the entries were largely 'straight' montages; but the sense of humour that pervades the forum quickly got in. Two years on, it's this taste for the frivolous, for the bizarre and the irreverent, that makes the Friday Challenges so entertaining. Sometimes, though, one person's irreverence can appear to others to have gone too far. This happened this week, with a post representing an egg in the guise of a suicide bomber. It's a tricky thing, comedy; we all want to push the boundaries, but it's all too easy to cause offence, even unwittingly. My personal view is this: it's our sense of humour that marks us out, that makes us better people, and that enables us to cope with the unimaginably awful. The ability to laugh at our misfortunes is our strength. I recognise that not everyone has the same boundaries when it comes to taste and decency: different rules apply to communities than to individuals. I'm glad the matter was cleared up, and hope that no ill feeling remains on either side. The tone for this week was set by Glen, whose tongue-in-cheek first entry pre-empted Pierre's mini fetish. (What? No shadow from the emblem on the table?) The second entry was a great one - complete with drill, and a neat reflection of the eggcup on the table. The third, fourth, fifth and sixth entries really had me in stitches - so many ways to try to get into that egg! A wonderful man trap, in particular; and I love the angle on that guillotine. (Drawn from scratch, perhaps?) Pauline's back with her hand-drawn wood and wallpaper - getting to recognise it! A great piece of work, love the teabag in the glass, and the pepper on the egg. The second entry is just wonderful: Pauline, you're getting a prodigious talent for this kind of thing. Not just the seamless blending of the egg into the head, but the perfect matching of the shadow as well. And that's a wonderful zip(per) in the third entry - damn, Pauline, this is good! An interesting solution from Dave, involving firing the egg out of a gun barrel - and why not. Great trajectory - but is that tank a little distorted? A very subtle first Challenge entry from Paul2812, with the egg being drummed in a pushchair - excellent perspective, the view of the egg looks just right there. A little oversaturated for the scene, but otherwise a very neat job. And the second entry cracks it open perfectly! After half a dozen false starts, James finally managed to post an entry! A good dragon bursting forth, with a convincing explosion of the eggshell around him. I particularly like the view of the white inside of the shell from the other side - a neat touch! A refreshing cartoon approach from ben, with a good whack of motion blur and a nicely drawn expression. Eggcellent indeed! More explosions, this time from Photoslopper. But this one has a political angle - and a radioactive glowing egg into the bargain. Tell me, has Kim Jong Il become a figure of global fun purely since the release of Team America? It takes a certain kind of mind to want to put a wig and makeup on a boiled egg. We get a glimpse into funkyjalla's brain here - and see a good-looking hairpiece. The ends are a little hard, though; remember the finger smudging technique, it would make all the difference here. but what a stunning second entry! Great modelling, fantastic lighting on the egg - and i really like the slight transparency of the dragon's wing. Excellent! A classical entry from Wayne, and beautifully accomplished. The upturned crown, the pieces of eggshell, the inside of the shell, the drip of yolk are all immaculately realised. What? No toast soldiers to go with it? Having a bit of trouble interpreting raffy's post. Hmm... let me see... it's an animation (that's how we know it's by Raffy) and there's a goose, and an egg that opens to reveal a sunhat inside. Er... am I failing to see what's under the hat? It doesn't look like a cat to me... I love the hatching chick in mguyer's post - a good broken egg shell, with a well-drawn interior. Couple of things, though, Marty: first, the top shell shouldn't be casting a shadow on the background! And, talking of backgrounds - isn't there a small element you forgot to remove there? As for the second entry, you ask "is this art?". Well, I don't know about that, but it's certainly entertaining! A dreadful pun, but a great montage from Storm - that face blends in really well, and I do like a dollop of green gunk on my egg. A very tasty and subtle reflection, too! A great explosion of light and colour from Tom. So much detail. so much going on there - great work! And the ring on the floor is especially convincing, reminds me of the old movie The Devil Rides Out. Another movie poster, this time from eyal fitoussi: highly polished, a great silhouette, very nice job altogether. Er... isn't the alien outnumbered two to one, though? I really enjoyed the second entry - a great piece of animation, telling a real story. The egg splat in the face is fantastic! An unusually straight montage from Neal this week: but pumped full of detail. The glisten on the egg white, the shine on the yolk, the fine cracks in the egg, and the way the white egg lining doesn't quite reach to the top of the shell on the far side - excellent. And my kitchen has been beautifully rebuilt behind the egg, too! And the patching on the second entry is simply fantastic. Great tape! A great joke, nicely executed, from michael sinclair. Is that how you open your eggs, then? Peel the top and then slice? Me, I cut the whole top off with a teaspoon, shell and all. Couple of observations here: the egg yolk should really dribble straight down, rather than meandering; and isn't the perspective on the name goine the wrong way? Deborah Morley has given us a good joke, and some wonderfully alien looking eggs - with Tony Blair popping out of one of them. I really like the idea here - but to me, it would have added a lot if he'd been coming out of one of the eggs a litle further back, rather than right at the front. Nice shading! A rather wonderful first entry from David Urquhart, although I mush confess some of the symbolism has me a little baffled. A great shadow on the egg, and a good lens flare effect where the lightning strikes the shell; but the edge of the figure is rather soft - I'd have gone for much less feathering on that cutout. And while the shading on his face matches the position of the flare, his shadow is cast from somewhere else altogether! Maybe that's because he's upside down... A fantastic scanning effect from Pierre, with that ol' handsome devil lurking inside the egg. A very convincing and well realized piece of work. But what's this - no Mini this week? Are you feeling OK? This has been a really enjoyable week! |

Re: Contest 104: Here we go again!
Thanks so much Steve. I had a lot of fun with this weeks challenge. I think the zippered egg was my favourite and it took the least amount of time to do!! The egghead one was a real challenge. I worked quite a while to get that top to match the skin tones but in the end it was well worth it. _________________ Pauline |

Thanks Steve. I think making that dribble of yolk look convincing was probably the most difficult thing I've attempted in Photoshop. Well done everybody |

That's the rare and valuable avis cattiformes raffius under the sunhat-they're incredibly shy,and this seems to start even before they've left the egg.(Also, they tend to lay their eggs in other birds' nests. That's one goose who got goosed!) _________________ Dogs have masters;Cats have staff. |
