Contest 19: Gunpowder, treason and plot
This weekend, children all over Great Britain will be lighting bonfires and setting off fireworks in commemoration of Guy Fawkes, who was hanged, drawn and quartered (talk about overkill!) for attempting to blow up the Houses of Parliament in 1605. Some say he was the last man to enter Parliament with honest intentions. I couldn't possibly comment.

Nearly 200 years on - anyone else care to have a go? High res is here.

100% 'shopped - well except the tourists who were Googled.

The explosion was created using a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer on a Alt-cloud filled layer with some added noise and a Layer Mask which I used the smudge tool to push outwards the explosion. The smoke another Alt-cloud filled layer with Noise and Median with a Layer Mask (I painted out areas using a black brush set to 20% on the Layer Mask)

Wow! Excellent entries, both of you. You know it's no fair that you all have such a head start on me over here in Florida...

Anyway, here is my entry. I figured if Maiden could poke fun at us Americans that I could too. Since I voted for Kerry this week, I thought this would be appropriate.

Lol, I gotta love that Osama on a bicycle.

I spent way too much time on mine. It is hard to see some of the details since Steve gave us a "low-high" res pic .

The standard of entries on this challenge is high - Are we all latent pryomaniacs I wonder?

Thanks Maiden and Brian this challenge rocked, i've always wanted to blow some buildings up. With Photoshop you get to do this without going to jail. hehe

Well, having read the feedback for the last Friday challenge I've decided to come clean and drop the FP tag - I only did it to remain anonymous in case the forum was full of strange cases (open to debate if you wish) - and it was a bit of a link to my website. Anyhow, this is the last you'll hear from FP the next time I'm back will be under my real name - watch out for Glen. So with that in mind . . .

I am struggling, big time with this one. I cannot seem to produce a realistic explosion effect. Any suggestions greatly appreciated on how best to tackle this.

Chris, apart from pinching one from a movie still, you could try this one.

I used a cloud rendered explosion rather than using one from an image - the advantage is that you create the explosion to your own scale disadvantage is that it may not be as photorealistic - but it's still good practise using filters and stuff.

Firstly create a strong cloud rendered layer by pressing Alt at the same time as selecting the Cloud filter from the Render filter set - ensure you have black and white set as your foreground and background colours because that gives the best output.

Next add a Gradient Map Adjustment Layer and set the gradient from black through red, orange, yellow and white (left to right) this will tint your cloud layer to look like a fireball (play about with the gradient to make it look just right)

Add some Noise with the Add Noise filter and then add a small amount (1 or 2) of Median from the the same filter set - this dirtys up the image and gives it a bit of texture.

Add some more noise and then using the Blur filter set select Radial Blur set the Blur Method to zoom and set the amount of zoom to a fairly high number 30-60 but don't over do it.

Then using the Lasso Tool make a selection around the cloud layer to roughly the shape of the explosion you want to make and then add a layer mask from that selection.

Next use the Smudge Tool and unlink the mask from the cloud layer by clicking on the chain icon between the cloud layer thumbnail and it's mask then set the Smudge Tool's strength to a lowist setting 20-40% and then ensuring you are working on the layer mask by clicking on it's thumbnail smudge outwards to create a more dramatic explosive effect.

Then add smoke by creating a new strong cloud rendered layer (black and white) Select/All (Ctrl+A) and add a layer mask then using a black brush with the opacity set to 20-40% paint out some of the smoke by painting directly on the layer mask. Switch the Blending Mode for this layer to Multiply add some noise and median and Bob's your Aunty.

Experiment with these techniques to suit your own style - and I hope this helps.

\edit Just seen Trinity's link which is very similar except the use of plastic wrap - it's all personal choice which is why I love Photoshop as it gives me a chance to create different effects just by playing with the filters and adjustment layers.
