Contest 21: The abbey habit
The abbey in the market town of Bury St Edmunds is a fine piece of architecture, and is mainly in pretty good condition. The refectory, though, has seen better days. Do you think you have enough masonry here to reconstruct it? High res file is here. ![]() |

Here's an attempt. Definitely needs work. Is it me, or is this an insanely difficult challenge? ![]() |

I think you pretty much nailed it Jeff. The cloning must have taken a while. My kudos. ![]() |

Here's a 4am Job from me. Could be considered a little boring but I found it really difficult coming up with a theme, esp. after maiden nabbed my idea... again!! ![]() This is certainly a bit of a tuffy!! ![]() |

Well my entry gets low marks for creativity this time. I really must check to see what the rest of you are up to before spending a bunch of time on these. ![]() Love the "Fasting Friar", by the way... ![]() ![]() |

Re: Contest 21: The abbey habit
I had all the masonry, all the mortar, everything I needed to renovate but when I got there, not only had they laid tarmac for the car park - this lot were there ranting on about "save the abbey'. Anyone want 1000 masonry blocks? ![]() _________________ most of the lack of sunshine in our lives is caused by us standing in our own shadow |

Re: Contest 21: The abbey habit
This turned out to be a tricky one, certainly. Hadn't expected you all to be so diligent about rebuilding our heritage with such precision! A charming entry from John-BoB (and, by the way, your avatar isn't showing up). The ruins fit nicely inside that snow ball, most convincing. The text on the base works pretty well, I'd say; you could make it taller, so it's not all bunched up, and a lower emboss amount would give it extra clarity. But you've got the angle and curve looking good. A couple of examples master masonry - the first from Jeff Scranton, with a truly painstaking rebuild of the original. Love the way you've made that arch work! And running the grass right through is definitely an improvement. This one must have been a lot of work, but I reckon it's paid off. Brian Garrison has reassembled the blocks in a slightly different way, but it's just as convincing: I particularly like the way you've left some of the rubble showing through there. I had to keep referring back to the original to see how you'd changed it, which is a huge compliment. A really good job. A couple of restaurant themes, with a different twist. Maiden's highly accomplished entry has a great sense of perspective, and a good gag to go with it. But look at those windows! They have a reflection, you can see the thickness of the glass, they mute the view beyond - altogether, that glass is 100% convincing. Top job! And I love the way you've reflected the bottom of the pillar in the floor. See! I did notice! Tabitha's turned the restaurant around, so we're looking in from the outside. This one's so naturalistic it's easy to skip over, but it's actually a highly skilled piece of work: the blue night tones outside contrast perfectly with the warm glow from the inside - and just look at the way the warm light illuminates the window reveals. The slight rippling effect on the windows makes a great glass texture, even if the middle window does appear to be falling out. Really great work there, Tabitha. Your facade is quite acceptable, MJ, especially since you've gone to all the trouble of allowing us to see through the gates. It would be mean of me to quibble about the perspective on the flagstones in front of each gate, so I'm not even going to mention it. But shouldn't we have some crenellations on top of that wall? A fantastic cast-of-thousands entry from Glen, with a perfect piece of perspective matching. Did that floor come with the police? It's such a good job it's really hard to see where the joins are. I can't even begin to imagine how you googled that picture, though. Tweaknik, your entry appeared to come and go - I didn't catch it in time. Were you having second thoughts? Or has your last-minute strategy let you down at last? For all those who found this one too tricky, I apologise for the arduous nature of this week's challenge. Let's get back to blowing things up! |

My last minute strategy always lets me down... Is the picture not working? If it is, there's something hidden in it, although I'm not sure how easy or obvious it is to spot. |

Cor, you're right! I wondered why you'd posted the original. Didn't see the face at first. Damn clever stuff - I think the subtlety was just too much for me... |

You'll probably need it, as the place is somewhere near the north pole. |
