Challenge 909: Down on the farm
I photographed this rather splendid tractor at Stowmarket Museum a few weeks ago. I like how the engine is mounted directly next to the front wheel. But who might drive such a vehicle? What might it transport? And how much smoke would belch out of that engine? High res is here. |

What a bizarre machine. Why? Tractors are meant for soft ground. This one looks a really heavy monster and, with the secondary wheels so far back, all that weight is on the single front wheel. Half the traction and half the resistance to sinking in soft ground. Doesn't make sense. I think it is intended for some other quite specific use. Hmmm? _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

David, I think it's an Opperman Motocart, ca 1946. |

					 Oh Michael!!
I just knew, if I left that there, that you would do the research I am too lazy to do! Thank you. It does indeed look like the Opperman.
The interesting thing is that it would appear to have full 360° steering which would make it incredibly manoeuvrable in tight spaces. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

360° steering! Of course, that explains everything. Good research! |

The minute I saw this I thought Heath Robinson! (Loyd - Heath Robinson is Britain's version of Rube Goldberg. Unless of course you're British, then Rube Goldberg is America's copy of Heath Robinson.) ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Yes you are quite right. I had based my guess on photos from the other side. Quite aside from the engine the steering would be blocked by this. Pity. 360° would have been really cool. Seems Mr Opperman missed a trick. ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Hard to know what to do with this bizarre beastie. Plus quite a tricky wide angle to build on. But fun ............ ![]() _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

It's a very attractive, contrasty work of art David, although you have played fast and loose with the lighting. And I see punky woman has turned up again. |

I thought steam punk was appropriate for this odd machine and she came more or less ready made. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Lovely Lloyd and David. I love that sketch you posted. Appreciate all the work you did re-coloring the tractor. Well done. True about the perspective. It really gave me a head ache. So I just went to town on a scene to try disguise my poor attempt of remedying the perspective. ![]() _________________ The grass is greener on the other side of the fence because there is more $hit there. |

I am quite befuddled by this Dennis. You have managed to adapt a straight and level perspective to a downhill environment ...... and, to my eye, it works! _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

It was no easy feat. I did raise the trailers left rear a few millimeters. Pity the image is so reduced. There's a lot of detail in it.

Dennis - Mr. Sinclair and I use the imgur.com free web hosting site. It allows for images or gifs up to 20mb. After uploading is complete you can copy the provided code and paste it here. I would love to see the full image and the detail of your work... looks great as is. |

Re: Challenge 909: Down on the farm
By pure coincidence, I was doing some infrared photography last Thursday. This image seemed to fit the required perspective fairly well, the structure back left is a climbing/zip-line tower. Engine still has that very rough idle...
