Challenge 927: Lift me up
I was passing a building in the process of being renovated this week when I saw this rather splendid hoist system. It was lifting what looked like a wardrobe up to the top floor window, and here it is on its way back down to pick up the fridge. What's the largest thing this device could carry? The animators among you might like to depict it in action. Mariner - a big job, but can you get rid of the scaffolding? High res is here.  |

That's a hard one Steve. The mathematicians and physicists among us will need to know 1. the weight of the vehicle and 2. the leaning angle of the gantry. As for me - yes I will get rid of the scaffolding. And the rest. |

This is not an entry but it's on topic. It is odd for me that this should strike you as an unusual object Steve. Here in Belgium they are a common daily site used for everything. Builders use them, house movers use them and even delivery companies. They come in every size from huge truck mounted to tiny trailer mounted. There are even collapsible ones that can be assembled in enclosed spaces like a small courtyard. Our apartment is set back from the street and could not be directly accessed from street level. When we moved in a large trailer mounted lift was used to raise everything to the fifth floor terrace of the neighbour below. 
This lift was used to raise in turn a small electric lift to the same terrace where it was installed to raise everything the last floor to our terrace and apartment. 
It's going to be fun imagining a new use for what to me is a completely prosaic everyday object! Mariner. They are not free standing. The top of the telescopic lift arm is always attached to the building. The 'trolley' then travels up and down the fixed arm. The large ones can handle huge weights. Huge offsets are not usually possible - I think 45° would be absolute limit. _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Mariner - one word - WOW I was curious about this magnificent building. After a bit of searching with Google Lens, it turns out it's in Marylebone and built in the early 1800's. Michael, after 10 years of viewing your work I have never seen you do anything as good as your first entry today. Deispite the leaning verticals, which you could obviously have easiliy corrected, the piicture is completely realistic. Well done! |
