Challenge 972: The automated street
One of the quirkiest museums in La Rochelle (sorry, Mariner) is the Museum of Automata, which features a large array of mechanical puppets from the last couple of hundred years. Some are displayed in this reconstruction of a Parisian street scene, which has been artfully constructed – complete with a cobbled floor. Of course, it would look better with some people milling about. Can you oblige? I have two different views from this part of the museum and couldn't decide which to use, so you can pick whichever one appeals to you most. High res are here and here.

Lots of varied responses so far ..... and all of them remarkably well done. Somehow just filling the street with people didn't really ring my bell. I nearly gave this a pass. Then I had a thought ........ They're back! Downtown urban street automata are METRO GNOMES!.  _________________ The subtlety and conviction of any Photoshop effect is invariably inversely proportional to the number of knobs on it ....... |

Another lively cast of characters Frank! It's interesting that, with the exception of a few characters in Ben's first entry, we have all, myself included, gone for very much late twentieth and early twenty first century robots. I can't help feeling that something must be lurking in the shadows that better reflects the spirit of automata which belong so very much in the late nineteenth and early twentieth century. One of the problems, of course, is that early automata tended to exist only from the waist up which is difficult to incorporate in a street scene. I have to confess to being somewhat stumped. If it's not one thing it's another. First computer problems, then software issues, now when I've tried to post I get "Internal Server Errors"... 
EDIT Well it worked for this test... maybe it just doesn't like my entries. |
