Contest 39: Downtown
I was in Boston last weekend, and took the opportunity to grab a few Challenge photos while I was there. Here's a rather sparse skyline, which I reckon could do with a few more skyscrapers dotted around. And perhaps the foreground needs smartening up, too. Hard hat time again! High res is here. ![]() |

Boston really needs a facelift. Work still in progress on the left side. I really need to work on the shadows, maybe later. ![]() _________________ -Never met a PS'er I didn't like- Will Rogers |

Starting to feel there is a theme running through the last month or so of challenges?? Ahhhhh the joys of perspective.... again! ![]() _________________ "Programming today is a race between software engineers striving to build bigger and better idiot-proof programs, and the Universe trying to produce bigger and better idiots. Perspective is fun...perspective is fun.... The fact that I am absolutely useless at it is neither here nor there, perspective is fun... ![]() |

Well we may not be the most original, but at least we're... err... "resourceful"? ![]() |

Re: Contest 39: Downtown
'parrently not as for the tornado, I'm still not exactly sure if it is one or not. if it was i would have made more debis and wind. I was going to make a sign next to it that said 'vortex transportation' and make it look like a man was appearing inside the thing or somthing like that but I ran out of time.. maybe I'll add some stuff to it, and repost as for making it, I googled a picture of some water swirling around in a circle, I cut out the vortex part and doubled it vertically the bottom where it touches the ground took 7 linked layers... although I'm sure there must have been an easier way _________________ Don't judge a man till youve walked a mile in his shoes, (that way, when you judge him, he'll be a mile away, and barefoot) |

Why do we have to build stuff all the time? Psh. I'm in a somewhat destructive mood, so me and my buddy 'zilla will do quite the opposite ![]() ![]() |

Re: Contest 39: Downtown
I decided to move a little bit of L.A. to Bahston with a pool, a palm tree and the Disney Hall ( which I had to flip for light source purposes) and for a touch of surrealism an amusment park in the background. (The Disney Hall is a trip. While it was under construction, I had jury duty downtown and the assigned parking was across the street. I got to sit in my car, eat my lunch every day and watch them work on it. Fascinating!) ![]() |

Re: Contest 39: Downtown
There I go, thinking I've given you all a straightforward task, and your fervid imaginations work wonders with it. You should all become urban planners. MJ's given us a vision of a cleaned-up, designer Boston with a new downtown area. The shadows on your skyscrapers match the shadows in the original photograph perfectly - top marks for detail. Did you draw those buildings, or are they all photographed? The architectural wonders of all nations have come together in Brian Garrison's cornucopia of concrete. Everything blends together well, and brightening up the buildings as they recede into the distance is a great perspective technique (memo to self: must try to get that tip into the next edition). I think I'd have varied the scale of the buildings a little more, though, they all seem to be fitting rather too neatly within the picture frame. And I'm not sure Big Ben would really compare in size with the Empire State like that… Great whirlwind, Einstein D Kid. You must share your technique with us - what did you start with here? Or is it all drawn from scratch? I'd have liked some distortion on the building seen through it, though, as that straight vertical rather detracts from the scene. Great effect, there. Dezolat0r, as his name implies, would rather smash stuff up than rebuild. Well, you're right, there has been rather too much architectural modelling recently, so I'll stop for a while. Great destruction here, I particularly like the explosion behind the helicopter - although EyeCandy's Smoke is always a little too wispy for my taste. Is that dinosaur supposed to be ghostly? Shouldn't you boost his contrast a little? If you can't change the view, conceal it - that's eventer's innovative approach. And why not: here's a great equine addition to the landscape. Cutting out things like whips is always tricky - you can never avoid seeing those bits of tree and grass in the way. Always redraw them instead, it's much easier! I'd really have lost that warning triangle on the back, though, it's horribly distracting. Jeff Scranton's west coast remodelling is a great piece of work: I love the subtlety of the edge of the swimming pool, and the roller coaster. The shadow of the building seems perhaps a little too strong, and too fuzzy: look at the man and the box in front of him, which are both casting sharp-edged shadows. And you will need to come back and fix that palm tree at some point! Great sense of scale and perspective on the building, even if it does cut into the highway. |
