Not at all cruel - you definately don't count as "fainthearted" more like "Brave" with a capital 'B' probably in 'bold' with some serious bevel and emboss!!!!

Yes. But also, and in a very real sense, No. A few of you have got the idea on how to do this one - think translation, rather than reflection. That's your only (cryptic) hint for now, all will be revealed on Friday!

Translation in the geometric sense, ie. shifting along an axis.

Now that I have submitted my late entry on the last two challenges, here is my entry for this one.

Sometimes I may be gone for a little while, but this will always be my favorite photoshop forum.

neal
how are you getting your pic to look like it is sitting on a surface, even though you can't even see the surface, and mine it just loos like a transparent camera is sitting on top of the wood

Hi Einstein D Kid,

I'm no genius or master at Photoshop. I had a difficult time with this contest, I still think my images are floating in space and not grounded on a surface. But since you asked, this how I did my entries: cheat.

I drew guides with the pens tool to help me with the perspective. Then I copied the camera and moved it below the original. With the Free Transformation Tool, I yanked and pulled until the copy follows my pen guides.

I made selections around the reflected camera's lenses and brushed a dark color to remove the bright highlights, since the reflection should show the underside of the camera. I copied and flipped small details like holes, lettering and screws.

With a low-opacity brush, I added color under the lenses to match the original camera's color. I ghosted and added a white gradient to the refected camera, so it looked looked as if it was receding into the surface.

Finally, I added a shadow under the original camera. I'm no writer and I hope you can follow my descriptions. If you can, Einstein D Kid, give it a try. It ain't brain surgery.

Deep respect,
Neal

Aaaaaaarggggg! I tried every bit of free and even 3-D transform, but no luck, so, I cheated. To do a proper reflection, you have to show the hidden under side of the lens. (I brought this subject up back in January in the problems and solutions forum: reflections). My dictionary defines translation as "To move from one place to another without rotation" That certainly isn't what I did........

Einstein D Kid,

Forgive me, I read your message a second time. Try Changing your shadow under your camera. The one you have now is more of a drop shadow. To help the camera sit on the wooden floor, cast a small shadow just under the bottom of the camera.

I hope that helps

Neal

Re: Contest 40: Single lens reflection
I added shadow more like you said, I actually changed the reflection ALOT, and by accident saved over my psd of the other version.
I changed it based on a shiny peice of wood I saw. please critique

Re: Contest 40: Single lens reflection
Ok, I have a few suggestions.
Cut out the tiny bit of white left at the bottom and left side of the camera. Add a subtle shadow almost right underneath the camera. Use the color adjustment menu or curves to make the camera have a brownish color to match the table since everything, especially a shiny camera, takes in color from it's surroundings. Skew the right side of the camera to match the lines in the table. Use the burn tool to make the bottom of the picture slightly darker, since the light source is coming from the top of the picture (Which is why the camera is bright at the top). Then sharpen the table, or since I hate the sharpen tool, blur down the camera to match the table. And, then you can remove the white patch that I metioned above from the reflection of the camera.
Oh, and if you feel like it you can darken the picture, since it is a bit bright.

Sorry if I went overboard, I try my hardest not to overlook any details, but obviously I am not perfect. Good work so far, definently pretty convincing.
I wonder what Steve has to say.

Re: Contest 40: Single lens reflection
thanks,
unfortunatly 11:20 pm on thursday (when I'm reading it, my time) is a bit too late too corect in time, but maybe I'll do it friday or afterwards anyway, depending on next friday challenge

otherwise though, that was exactly the kinds of suggestions I was looking for, and it doesen't hurt my ego whatsoever if I asked for it to begin with
