Sorry it's so late - I hope I haven't missed the boat.

Holograms are the new neon, even the buildings - so they are saying in posh designer circles.

Re: Contest 88: Piccadilly Circus
Despite Paul McFadden's cheeky early entry, we had some great work this week - and a difficult challenge it was, too.

Stefan started things off with a fantastic montage: not only are all the signs duly lit up, there are great extra details in here: the streaks of car tail lights, the flash of the camera, the moon and moody sky behind. Excellent work, Stefan!

More image Googling from mguyer and CWBasset - seems to be a recurrent theme! And there's Marty cropping up again in his work, which we've come to expect. And a cute witch in the second entry!

I love the lack of street lighting in Paul 2005's entry - it gives the scene a spooky surreal quality. Good move inserting that McDonalds ad, too - and the digital clock is a neat touch.

Two entries from Atomicfog - a fantastic rain-battered scene (really like the blue glow over the lower half of the image) and a fine warm version. The glow around the signs works really well here: there's a great sense of them being not just bright, but lit up from within. Great stuff.

Where there's a road, there's a crossing - and Steve Mac has placed the Beatles on it. Nice job! And is that you leering out of the purple advertising hoarding? Good work on the signs - but both Boots and Burger King seem to have closed early.

Great lighting, and great glows, in the first entry from newcomer i - although I think that name will make it hard for people to click on the link here! Best of all in this entry is the sense of a rainy street, with shadows and excellent reflections - both of the Sanyo sign, and of the traffic bollard in the middle. These are great touches, and make a big difference to the image. Welcome to the forum!

Peter Edwards has built on i's post, adding fireworks and a great advertisement for that book. I know a couple of guys gave you a hard time over reusing someone else's image, but I see it as more of a homage than a rip-off. Next time, though - well, you know.

At first glance, it's hard to imagine how much work went into Eggbox's entry. But this is a fantastic piece of work: it's no mean feat to turn all those lights out. And I love what's left: the changed traffic light, the flash photography, the shadow puppet being projected above Burger King. Fantastic! It's almost a disappointment when the lights come back on - but I do like the red glow on the portico of the building across the road. Cute Easter egg, too!

There's a fantastically hazy sky in Pauline's entry, with a moon struggling through the haze. Lots of great touches here: the elliptical glow around the Boots sign, the missing Samsung letters, the lit upper floor in Burger King. A little confused about that bright patch over on the right, directly beneath the moon: what is this? But a great piece of work, Pauline, whatever it is.

I know London is a long way from Canada, but I can assure Pierre that even despite the relative proximity, we can't see Paris from Piccadilly Circus. Lots of great details: the edited Samsung lettering, the fully lit Burger King, and especially that great taxi. Are you sure he should be so patently ignoring the one way signs, though?

Several of you have successfully left the lights in Burger King showing, but Bob has brought every shop to life: Boots, Gap, even those stores on the other side of the street. A painstaking and thoroughly convincing job: you've even lit up those interiors that weren't lit in the original. And your solution to the window reflection problem is a good one. It's really only the absurdity of the cricket score that lets this one down.

A wonderful rain effect from BobbyJo - and it's the umbrellas that really make it here. Perfectly blended in with the original! Love the reflections in the road, too. Excellent work! Especially the second version.

Born2Run is obviously dreaming of far-off shores again. And why not? The Vegas casino sign is so much more impressive than that dull Samsung offering. Great glows, a well edited sign (taking out the building behind was a nice touch) and a great entry throughout.

When I was a kid, I was always desperate to go to Piccadilly Circus - you know, expecting to find a circus there. Looks like jwhite has a similar idea! Plenty of other British references there - Tom Baker was, of course, the best Doctor Who, although I'm not so taken with Benny Hill. And is that the Starship Enterprise I spy shooting across the sky?

A fun take on the problem from Slim, with a good stab at night time goggles. But don't those things give you an entirely monochromatic view? I've never used the things, but I have an idea of how they look. Hmm - I can feel another Friday Challenge bubbling through here!

There's a great tonal feel to yuvalbra's image, which has an inner glow that lends the image a mystical quality. Wonderful sky, and a good spread of fog at the bottom: very nice piece of work!

Heavens above! Killer moths! I don't know what type of moth Dek_101 has in Redditch, but these ones seem to have eaten their way through entire buildings. Time to get some serious mothballs out!

I've never felt the need to choose a 'winning entry', but if there was such an accolade DaltonX would certainly claim it this week. Removing all the people from the image is a task that would have filled me with dread: but it's been accomplished with a fantastic degree of both skill and patience. Every part of the lower floors of those buildings has had to be reconstructed from scratch: the interiors of Burger King and Boots, the ice cream booth, the ground floor of Gap. And there's so much else going on here: the new signs, the spotlights on the top, the street lamp, the flags and lighting on the building opposite, the moving sign, the replacement McDonalds ad... Truly, this is an extraordinary effort. If I wore a hat I'd take it off to you, Dalton. Incredible! And I love the second entry!

Here's another solution! If you can't light them, cover them. At least, that's tank172's approach, and it's one that works well for me. Great tearing, gtood texture - but I'd like to see some ropes, nails or other suggestion of how those coverings are fixed up there.

Cats, again - so it must be an entry from raffy. But also, gorillas: a tastefully concealed King Kong is doing battle with a biplane up on the roof. Apart from the bright green of the biplane, everything looks great here: lower the saturation there, maybe? Or even replace the green altogether?

After the debate on repurposing other people's entries, it's refreshing to see Glen's hilarious take on the problem. There are elements from just about everyone's post to date included here - as well as the image rustlers in the foreground who are obviously responsible. Brilliant work, and I think it lays the issue to rest!

Beautiful work from Whaler, who's lit up all the interiors to an expert degree - and added headlight and tail light flares in the foreground for good measure. A great treatment of the crowd: silhouetting them like that really throws the background into relief. And he's even gone to the trouble of lighting up the sign on the top of the building opposite - great attention to detail! I really like this one, Hans-Erik - and well deserving of a title. Visual Viking it is, then!

A novel solution from maiden: after all why shouldn't the hoardings be holograms? And I'm sure a virtual Burger King has all the nutritional value of the real thing. Nice work!

Once again, some really inspired entries this week - and you've all clearly put a lot of effort into the project. I've really enjoyed going through this week's entries!

Hey Dalton,

I've just seen your entries. Incredible stuff. Brilliant how you removed all the people from the picture. Can't take my hat off as I haven't got one but will a beanie do?

Thanks for my new epithet and the appreciating comments, Steve, I feel honoured.

BTW, with all the previous challenges and the new one coming up, why don't we change the name of of this forum to "How to SWEAT in Photoshop".

But I love it!

Re: Contest 88: Piccadilly Circus
Well Steve that bright glow is supposed to be from the moon. I was following a tutorial here and it was much to bright and I toned it down. I guess it should have been toned down some more. I was having a little trouble controlling lighting effects here and getting exactly what I wanted.

Steve, I have to agree with you on Tom Baker. I've watched Doctor Who since the early 1970s and he defines the role!

[sigh] I should have stuck to a simple time and temperature display. That was an actual score from a game played last week. [note to self: avoid sports references in the future -- especially to Cricket. ]

Re: Contest 88: Piccadilly Circus
I appreciate your compliment Steve. For my first challenge and my first week with PS I guess I got a little too eager to submit something. I realized I could have spent more time on it, and yes, shamefully that is me not being able to come up with something a little more creative. Your sight has done nothing but inspire me to learn. Thanks again!

Re: Contest 88: Piccadilly Circus
Thanks Steve! This week has been hectic for me to say the least.

The first thing that popped into my mind when I saw the challenge last week was to erase all the people and signs and turn the city into a ghost town. But after the time spent on the first couple of signs, I couldn't fathom how long it would take me to clone all the people! After seeing Dalton's entry, I was amazed at how he reconstructed the buildings in such detail. This definately a challenge I'll have to come back to in the future.

As far as the nails and ropes.....it must have been a master craftsman covering up all the signs

Thanks again Steve!

Thanks for the encouraging comments Steve... that was definitely a challenge and a half for me lol... I'm glad there are no winners in the challenges... as far as I'm concerned everyone who enters the Challenge is a winner in my eyes!
