Contest 118: Shading the shades
Bit of a technical challenge this week. Shadows seem to be a recurrent theme: as we saw last week, some of you got the shadows of the toothpaste tube so it looked convincing, some didn't quite get there. So here's a shadow test you can really get your teeth into. Here's a pair of sunglasses: note the lighting direction, which is shown by the hotspots on the frame. I'd like you to add a shadow on the ground, cast by these glasses. Remember that the glass itself is semi-transparent! It's a tricky job, and I expect you'll find it fairly taxing... Special instructions for this week This challenge depends on you working out how the final job will look for yourselves. For this reason, I'm asking you all not to post your entries until Wednesday, so that you all have a chance to work it out without seeing what everyone else has done. This way, you'll still have time to make changes if you need to! Hope this is OK with everyone. |

Sure, Wayne, you're welcome to borrow as much as you like. If you don't want to borrow, it's quite easy to make sand yourself. Just get a big rock and put it in the grinder... Seriously, though, it's easy to do. First select two (in my case) yellow shades for foreground/background. Then start a new layer and fill it with the selected color. Next thing is the clouds filter. In my case I had too low contrast so I added a curves adjustment layer to correct that. To achieve the ridges I used Quick Mask to make the selections, blur that slightly while in QM, and then the old dodge and burn along the selections with a soft edge brush. I use an opacity setting around 25% doing that. Invert the selection between using Dodge and Burn to get the shadow effect. Repeat this step as necessary to get as many ridges you like or if you want them at a different angle. On top of the sand layer I added a noise layer to get some grain. Just set the right blend mode for your fill color (black, white or 50% grey) and you should be all set. _________________ Only in my brightest moments I understand myself |

My take. Worked mostly on the shadow, ignoring the glass and other issues. Love the first glasses posted (the ones on the sand).  |

Kept it simple, cos it was quite tricky once I started on it, to be honest I aint sure if it is any good.  _________________ Corners are just bent straight bits. |
