Re: Challenge 976: Doctor Octopus
I really hadn't expected this one to pull in so many entries and, considering the difficulties, so many animations.

Great stuff.

Re: Challenge 976: Doctor Octopus
First to deal with the octopus this week was lwc, nestling it neatly behind a shipwreck. I like all the wildlife – especially the tortoise. A great view from the cockpit in the helicopter entry, as it takes over a ship. The juddering of the helicopter is very well judged. A good hark back to last week in the sushi entry! Beautiful water motion in the canoe entry – I like how the man is mimicking the octopus’s pose. Not sure about the red eyes. The colouring of the bathroom image reminds me of The Shape of Water. Is there just a bit too much movement going on here? A truly bizarre toilet entry – is that a 3D modelled room? Looks like it. Interesting. Nestled behind the trees in the beach entry, but it’s the cockatoo that wins the prize here. A truly beautiful mermad, but shouldn’t the octopus have wrapped its tentacles around her? A truly gruesome shark entry, with ingenious animation. A real marathon effort this week, Loyd.

I like the way GKB's octopus wraps itself around the ship, its tentacles going between the masts and over the bough. Beautifully integrated into the scene. The Kraken has woken. It’s at the opposite end of the scale in the underwater entry, where it’s neatly integrated into the scene – but a bit pale, perhaps? A perfect soundtrack to the animated version, and some very convincing rippling effects. The only thing that bothers me is the school of small fish moving as a unit, which doesn’t look right.

An intricate scene from Ben Boardman, with the octopus intertwined around a mermaid and, I’m guessing, Neptune as he’s carrying a trident. Lots of interesting texture in the background, a very engaging image – and it’s clearer in the second version. Grim reality in the kitchen image, and the second version with it more firmly inside the tank is a big improvement. I have to say, I used to eat them occasionally (although always found them rather rubbery), until I watched My Octopus Teacher, since when I haven’t had the stomach for it.

I like the way michael sinclair’s octopus scuttles along the sea bed, the bulging eyes being a real bonus. The challenge this week, though, was to see what you could do with the supplied image… still, this is a good one. Interesting to see your image from a few years ago. Why is there a static frame around the octopus that doesn’t move as it rotates? Surely there’s a better way to show the shine on the jar?

I like how tooquilos's octopus merges into the rock background, as if it’s lying in wait for unsuspecting ships. Not entirely sure about the one waving tentacle in the animated entry – it’s much better when it’s under the water and waving more of them.

An undersea location from Mariner, recoloured to a proper octopus pink. I like the shadows of the fish on its head, although they should perhaps bend around the curve of the head. The only thing that’s missing here is the sense of it being underwater; a blue overlay needed? And I wonder if the shadow underneath it is just too crisp.

Good lighting from dwindt, with the octopus very well integrated into the underwater scene. I do like vertical streams of bubbles.

A natural science lesson in Frank's animation, with the octopus zooming up to the camera in close-up. Great animation and fascinating text, but do turn off hyphenation! Great tentacle movement. It’s been a while since you’ve given us an animation.

Excellent week. Thanks, Gordon, for the starting image.

Re: Challenge 976: Doctor Octopus
Thanks Steve. A blue overlay? Too easy!
Shadows bending around its head? Too difficult!
Drop shadow too crisp? Yes, you are right.

I have no idea, just an image found during a search... the man on the canoe and the shark were the ones I liked best.

Thanks Steve, a very fun challenge.
