Ashtray problem
Is there a solution to have the shape "fulfilled" when black opacity texture is used?

Re: Ashtray problem
I'm afraid not, Emil. To do this properly you'd need Boolean operations, which are not yet supported in Photoshop.

But here's an alternative approach. By creating the ashtray in a series of shades of grey, as seen on the left, you can make a Depth Map to extrude it into more or less the shape you want:

Note that this method can produce a jagged bottom to the ashtray: I used a Cross Section to trim that off.

Re: Ashtray problem
I have tried the depth map but the result was really awful. Your is perfect. It looks I need to better understand how the depth map works. The white colour is top, black is bottom and the grey is between them. I know what I will be doing in the evening :-)

Many thanks for help Steve.

If you don't mind having your ashtray with sloping sides, you'll get even better results. Remember you can edit the depth map itself after you turn it into a 3D object.

Re: Ashtray problem
It looks that my DepthMap is too thickness. Can we control the thickness as we can control the extrusion or it all depends on the shades of grey?

Re: Ashtray problem
Yes, this happened to me as well. You can't control the extrusion thickness in the same way as you can with regular extrusions, but you can scale the whole object just in one dimension, which is what worked for me.

Re: Ashtray problem
I did not know that there is an option in Scale tool to change each dimension individually. Thank you, it works now but the Depth Map does not produce smooth surface. I expected that gradient could help to get object extruded by DepthMap smooth/smoother but the result still is not perfect. Anyway it is great tool.

Re: Ashtray problem
Getting smooth vertical edges is always going to produce somewhat rough edges. The best solution is to make the gradient a little wider, which will result in more sloping edges, and which should work better.

Alternatively, you could combine this technique with a cylinder to form the outside of the ashtray.

Re: Ashtray problem
I have already tried combination of 2 objects extruded by 3D extrusion but connection between them are clearly visible. I tried the cylinder now but I am not sure how to combine with the previous technique.

Re: Ashtray problem
It is funny to play with the cylinder, but really, it has smooth surface.

Re: Ashtray problem
Still it is not perfect but it is great how it is made.

You're getting very close there! A very interesting solution.

Re: Ashtray problem
Emil - here's my solution -- like Steve says PS 3D does not support Boolean ops (hopefully in future) so I try building things out of various shapes.

It is amazing Frank, how did you make the smoke?

I have tried to build it by two separately extruded shapes but the connection between them was visible.

Here is my last best result:

Great techniques there Emil, I like the final one with all the reflections and refractions .. now what about the smoke?

Lovely work Frank, and excellent smoke, almost makes me want to start smoking again..

Re: Ashtray problem
Thanks Deborah, Emil I like your latest version -well done --- the smoke is just a picture of smoke extracted from a black background -- I did however make a copy of it and made it 3d and merge it into the scene to see where the reflection would fall - I then deleted the 3d version after placing the smoke picture .
