Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
I for one have been on the receiving end of someone calling my work 'crap'. Fair enough but they could offer no justification for the criticism and a lengthy argument ensued. If I think something is wrong or needs improving; firstly, I ask myself, could I achieve any better? If I believe I can, I will try to offer advice without appearing superior. Everyone has something to learn, especially with Photoshop where there are 101 ways to achieve one particular effect. There is no right or wrong way to do something. If you end up with that which you set out to achieve, does it really matter how you got there? Without wishing to get into the whole 'what is art?' debate; people have their own styles and methods. Some produce high-art, others functional illustrations. Personally, I see art as any kind of creativity. There are no rules by which it should be judged as good or bad. If you are one step further toward being happy with what you do, then surely, that is all that matters? I've also managed to contradict myself in the reply to Dek-101's post in the general forum..ho hum, you win some, you lose some ![]() _________________ A happy-go-lucky chap, always dressed in black |

Hello Everyone!! Incredible works of art to you all! I'd like to try my hand at one of these challenges... I sort of modeled it from DaltonX. I liked the concept... I hope to attempt more challenges in the future as this is a very good learning experience. Fabulous book Steve, and wonderful site! Warm Regards, Chris ![]() |

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
See inspiration does work, great entry Tank172. None of us should feel embrassed about our work its all great stuff here and we have an excellent coach in Steve who points us in the right direction on how to quicken up our workflow and turn the mundane into something truly fantastic. Stick with it as most of the Challenges are tied in with what's already in the book ready for you to learn from and if you get stuck Steve, David, myself, and several others here are ready and willing to help out. I'll always share my techniques as I don't believe there should be barrier to learning for anybody regardless of age, gender and financial status. I noticed flood waters don't have reflections, especially when viewed from long distances. The water is much too murky. (Ex: http://www.die-sachsen-kommen.de/bild/foto1.jpg) ![]() _________________ -Atomic |

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
It's only a bit of fun after all - (seriously Paul, don't lose heart, open mind to learning and all that. So what if there's some excellent images - life's too short ... get in there and learn, learn, learn) As a matter of interest though, if the images 'shouldn't' be on here then where 'should' they be ? where do you suggest people show their improved skills or the skills they have already ?. I got the book already possessing a sackfull of skills in the hope that I'd learn new ones - which I certainly have and hope to continue doing so ![]() _________________ most of the lack of sunshine in our lives is caused by us standing in our own shadow |

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
In response to Paul's comments and others: I view this forum as a hard-core competition with myself. For the most part I'm at the bottom of the barrel with regard to artistic ability and Photoshop proficiently. However, over the past months of participating in this forum I noticed that my skills and artwork have improved, going from total crap to a little less crappy. Funny as that may sound, it is progress in the right direction and I'm ecstatic about that. Another benefit I've found are Steve's comments regarding my entry. Several times I knew my entry was missing something or just didn't look right, but I was unable to to determine what the problem was. Steve was able to pinpoint the problem and this has really started to improve my perception skills. In short, check your ego at the door, quit your belly-aching and go for it! |

I have to agree with you on that one Glen I also got the book even tho I already had a few (not a sackful lol) skills in Photoshop but Steve's book opened up a whole new world in using Photoshop for me and a completely new way of learning... which I hope to continue with help from Steve and people like yourself ![]() |

Thank you all for your generous responses! I've worked with photoshop for less than 4 months. I use it primarily for real-estate marketing and I'm simply amazed as far this program's versatility. ...(i think that's spelled right)... ![]() Thanks again everyone! Chris |

I've fiddled with turning day scenes into night with some of the properties I've worked with (to "enhance" their night time lighting, ...so they say.) The easiest way that I've found, and I solely used this technique in my montage , is to take a soft-edge black brush with an opacity and flow of 50% or less and simply brush on the night time air! I also put it on a separate level. Task took 5 minutes, tops. ok, that's my two cents... ![]() |

Re: Contest 84: Flood the city
Paul, I take your comments on board, of course: and I'm sorry you feel you're unable to compete in this particular challenge. However, to bar paople from taking part because they're too good would seem to be fundamentally against the spirit of the forum - for the same reason that no-one is ever ridiculed here for entries that they feel are not as "good" as some of the others. This challenge is a difficult one, on the face of it. But as some of the entries this week have shown, you don't have to take the instructions literally: there are many ways to flood a city. It's all about pushing your capabilities, and learning techniques from others. You've done great work in the past, as good as anything else here; and you'll continue to do so if, as I hope, you'll stick with us. Sure, some people have more developed Photoshop skills. But really, it's about imagination more than mastery of the technology, and that's something I know you have plenty of. This isn't a competition, in that there's no winner and no prizesl you can pit your wits against other entrants without, I hope, any sense of failure. Join in, enjoy the process, and continue to develop. But please don't feel you aren't up to scratch! I hope you'll feel confident enough to enter this week. Your contributions have always been welcome, Paul, and we'd be sorry to lose your talents. |
