Contest 80: Bye bye, beautiful bus
Those of you unfortunate enough not to live in London won't be aware of this, but a couple of weeks ago the faithful old Routemaster double decker bus was retired from service, to be replaced by an ugly modern design with doors at the front and no charm.

So here's the original. What should we do with this? Consign it to the scrap heap? Or find some way to send it on its way with a flourish? The choice is yours.

High res is here.

Maybe a certain group of vigilante crime fighters could use it!

Throw them all together, rebuild and use as sightseeing busses I would say.

Hmm, I'm not a bus spotter or anything, but that looks suspiciously like a "Guy" bus to me and not a Routemaster.

I thought I'd "cheat" a little and get some other bus perspectives from this site www.busphotos.co.uk when I noticed none of the Routmasters looked like yours

Paul, its not a guy bus, but it doesn't seem to be a routmaster either! the routemasters on that site share the same body, just have a different front to it

Well, the bus on the right is definately a Guy. The coachwork is slightly different, but the grille is identical. The "Guy" name from the top centre of the grille is missing on both busses.

Maybe Maiden could help here? She's probably a little too young though to have driven one of those

EDIT: Apparently "The bus is certainly not a Routemaster. It is a Guy Arab with
Northern Counties bodywork originally with LUT (Lancashire United Transport)
based in NW Manchester, dating from early 1960's. So it is totally
different in terms of both chassis and bodywork, as, apart from RMC4 all
Routemasters had AEC chassis and Park Royal bodywork. For information RMC4
had an ECW (Eastern Coach Works) body.
."
I asked the webmaster of that site. OK so I have nothing better to do presently

Your spell checker seems fine, but you have a couple of things reversed. The number on the left hand skip and the AIR FRANCE just showing on the Concorde

I like how your bus shadow on the skip lid shows the window detail.

Fear not my friends across the pond; I have made the bus right at home here in the states. Mind you, I did need to make a few minor changes to satisfy the locals. Moving the steering wheel to the “proper” side was the toughest part.

We have a long tradition of turning our old vehicles into diners—from train cars to airplanes and now double decker buses.

Going by the clientele we are attracting, I think we have a hit on our hands.

Very good idea and nicely carried out, but why don't you make a double diner, now that you have to stories to play with. By the way, the light in your picture seems to come from several directions, judging from the shadows on the building, on the bus and under the bus.

This one washed up on the shores of Cancun and one of the locals gave it a new paint job and put it to use.

By the way, Kenney and Lexus, my original attempt at this challenge had my bus abondoned and beat up as well... and when i saw how nice both of yours turned out, i had to change my way of thinking! keep up the good work.

Thanks for the feedback Whaler; the upper level is reserved for private parties

The shadow under the bus is caused primarily by the bright lights streaming out of the diner windows, but that is not to say that there aren't inconsistencies in the shadowing

Send it across the pond. There is always a photoshop addict wanting to take pictures of it.

Evolution! From a great doubledecker to a bus greater than Mini. Maybe I stretched the subject a little too far time.
