How do you lot manage to make these? I would like to enter. Or, Steve, give us an easy one next week, like making a car look modified www.maxpower.co.uk will give you a feel as to what i mean by modified, that would be nice. I can kind of do those.

Steve's book give you a good insight into how to do most of these Challenges. But if you're struggling post your problem in the Image Doctor section of the forum and we will all give you some advice and help.

So much so that I thought you might like to give a constructive critique to one of my own efforts. I hope I have the ability to send across this jpeg, apologies if it all goes haywire from hereon in!

Well Roy I have to say. well done, its better than mine. But at that angle wine wouldn't be coming out as much as yours, but hey, i don't care! You should be proud you can do that.

Hi everyone,

I bought the book recently and I am plodding my way through. Steve has helped me with a couple of problems.

I'm new to photomontage so don't be to hard on me, I know the bottle is naff but I can't get my head around the 3d transform filter so I did it with free transform/warp.

Cheers

OK, I know I have some glitches with this image, but if I spend any more time on it, I will probably start drinking myself!

Hi all. Thanks Alex for your generous comments, but I don't think you're being fair to yourself by comparing two very different approaches to the subject. I like that dreamy/drunken blurred effect of yours - very atmospheric. I could use a decent cig too, but I'm trying to cut down........!

I have stayed healthy by staying away from "cigs" and staying nearer to "sigs" Lol

Re: Contest 60: Pour me a glass
I really like these "back to basics" challenges - they may not offer so much freedom for artistic expression (althoughy many of you have proved me wrong there), but they do test your Photoshop skills. And there's been an excellent set of entries this week.

When I posted a comment about MJ's entry not showing the wine as horizontal, I was referring to the light green space just below the foil at the top of the bottle. It's still there in the second entry, MJ! A good splash of wine in the glass, but does your bottle have a blockage? Love the cubist entry, though.

A great piece of design from uk2usadaz, with fantastic attention to detail: the splashing of wine in the glass, the immaculately torn top of the foil, and above all the detail of the kick in the bottom of the bottle (and you're the only one to spot that). Fine piece of work altogether! To nitpick (and you know i can't resist it), I'd have moved the graphic on the label down a touch - it looks like it's slid round the side somewhat. I can't believe you don't have a title yet - so let's make you Designer Dynamo in recognition of your excellent graphic skills!

I really liked maiden's entry, which added a load of extra elements - loved the cork, and especially the wine surface within the bottle. The shadow of the glass should be vertical where it falls on the wall, though! And are you sure the world's ready for sparkling beaujolais?

An expert job from David Asch, with some lovely splashing in the glass and a good wine level in the bottle. I don't know what kind of foil cutter you use, but you should replace the blade - this one looks like it's been hacked with some blunt nail scissors!

Given the amount of wine in Atomicfog's bottle, I'd expect more than the trickle that's coming out of the bottle at present. But I do like the turbulence in the glass, and I appreciate the label! There's still a hint of air space below the foil on the bottle, which needs to be addressed. And how you managed to pour the wine out without removing the cork is a mystery to me.

There's something really touching about BobbyJo's plaintive entry: there's plenty of wine in the bottle, but we're only getting it a drop at a time. Excellent wine level, the top of the bottle really does look convincingly empty. And I love the detail of the wine creeping up the left side of the glass: surface tension, eh? Great work!

A great sense of wine level from Neal, both in the glass and inside the bottle. Is that thin stream of wine realistic, though? I'd have thought pouring liquids would follow more of a parabolic shape. Still, top marks for pouring the wine that close to the edge of the glass without spilling a drop!

It's always good to welcome a new reader, especially one like ajftv, who seems to have taken it upon himself to address every section of the forum in one go. And a great first entry, following the established tradition of completely ignoring the instructions to come up with an impressive piece of work. Nice job, but watch that saturation! It's all just too strong for comfort! Great sense of movement in the wine, though, both spilling from the glass and in the blur of the bottle. Nice job, Alex!

Welcome to the forum, Roy. What a fantastic first entry! The splash in the glass and the texture ofd the wine from the bottle are both superb, as is the level of wine in the bottle. Again, though, I'd have made the wine come out of the bottle with a little more force - but overall, this is an excellent entry. Top marks!

Our third new contributor is Rufus, who's set himself a near-impossible task: turning the bottle around in perspective. The 3D Transform filter would have struggled with this one, and his solution works well: it's a really tricky job, and this is getting very close. Distorting the label and bottom of the bottle has resulted in the neck becoming too compressed: I think the best solution would have been to put the original neck back on the bottle after the Warp process, perhaps warping it slightly in the other direction. It would, of course, be rude of me to point out that Chardonnay is a white wine, so I won't mention the fact. Welcome to the forum, Roy!

I wasn't expecting to laugh out loud this week, but Glen's entry really tickled me. What a fantastic job! The squeeaing of the bottle is really superbly achieved, and the shading is just right. And I love the extra touches: the tiny hold in the bottle top, the spray of wine coming out, and especially the tiny amount of wine that's actually made it into the glass. Brilliant!

A good stream of wine in CWBasset's entry, with a great dynamic slurp in the glass. The tearing of the foil works well, but there's a classic mistake here: wine - indeed, any liquid - never slopes downhill! Sand, maybe, even thick treacle, but thin liquids always, always have a horizontal surface. Tilt a bottle and check it out!

As I said last week, this Challenge came about after I had to do it as part of an illustration. The finished illustration is here - it was a huge illustration (44cm high, or 17 inches for those of you living in the stone age) for a story about how ageing rock stars are getting into the wine growing business. For those who are interested (and living in the UK), it's appearing in tomorrow's Daily Telegraph.
