Size doesn't matter:

The American "Big Boy" was the largest steam locomotive in the world, and boasting a set 16 huge wheels.

GKB.

Looks like another blockbuster. Thank you for including me in such a distinguished cast, though I hate to think in what role.

Are we invited to the premier showing?

Having just been to Ayers Rock (Uluru) in Australia, I had to incorporate it in my entry + plus a local witch doctor.

Long before 'Potter' came along there was another "Crazy Train".

I am really impressed with the images. I particularly like the ones where the train is breaking out of or through things; those images have some real impact. I decided to go with a surreal magic angle ...

I found the thing under a covered bridge about 100km from where I live...

What great images this week. Neal, did you take the original train out or find another picture. Gordon happy to be in your production. Wayne, great!
These new stargates needed a bit more work.
(Apologies to the artist who did these fantastic sculptures)

Great pictures and ideas as ever this week. Not coming out to play this week as someone waved money in front of me and I can't resist the challenge to earn it!

GKB, thank you for the starring role - excellent montage by the way and I am also very grateful to you and Neal for the 'Guide to Good Smoke'.

So many good images this week. I like yours BigVern, a good scene you have put together there and nice touch with HTCHIP book at the back and upside down.

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Many suitably magical images this week - and good to se so much Photoshop wizardry accompanying the excellent ideas.

First out of the sorting hat was j.harvatt, whose train is appearing in a magic forest full of symmetrical trees - a cool effect, there. A great swirl where it's coming into being, and the stars are a good touch. Very tasty! And the added smoke in the second entry is a real treat.

A good blurry background, with a great angle on the train and sone fine smoke from 2bfree. The background all seems rather gloomy, though - and I'm not sure the colour of the sky really helps! I like the wheel spin effect, and the extra carriage fits well.

A good idea from james, who has the train riding the 'rails' of a speeding jet. And the magic carpet is a good addition! Some rather odd perspectives, though - watch that one! A fantastic second entry - great sense of movement, great bending, and the jockey fits well up there.

A wonderful stone top hat from Babybiker, with his first post in the Friday Challenge. Great lightning effects, and I particularly like the way they disappear into the hat, along with the good motion blur. Great work - and welcome to the forum!

There's some real dynamism in Sophie's entry: the curve on the train gives it a real added sense of speed. It works really well above that crowd, too: good work, Sophie!

Great motion blur, and a fantastic bending effect from dave.cox: this must have been a tricky one to make work, but the train really does look as if it's steaming out of that tunnel. Talking of which - is the steam a little too transparent over the tunnel entrance? Maybe it's just me. Nice one.

Another tunnel, this time from Ben Mills: a great sense of colour here, and a good stab at the smoke. Is the train too small for the tunnel, though? Good angles, good perspective.

A very classy piece of work from Wayne, whose train is smashing with tremendous realism through the wall. Truly excellent flying bricks and debris! And tucking the front of the train behind the railings reall adds to the scene. This is a fantastic entry, Wayne!

A very moody, mysterious shot from Whaler: talk about going off the rails! Intriguing foreground blur - but the train doesn't seem to be moving. Stuck on the points, perhaps? The added smoke in the second entry helps.

A beautiful monochrome scene from Toby, with fantastic steam effects: you say it's a pain to draw, but you've realised it perfectly. Worth the effort! Great curves, on the train and the carriages. Good work.

A truly fantastic montage from Neal this week. For those who don't recognise it, the original is a train crash that occurred in Montparnasse in the 19th Century - this print is available for sale all over the city (and you can see it here). Grafting the Hogwarts Express on there has been accomplished with masterful skill, and painting the existing carriages to match - indeed, recolouring the whole background - must have taken some time. Love the wonky train sign!

A very convincing job from meguyer, with an expertly flipped train that slots perfectly into its underground surroundings. Fantastic perspective matching, and a well flipped train sign. This is extremely neat work. Interesting (cough, cough) smoke effect in the (cough) second entry (cough cough) - a bit too much smoke, do you think?

Beautiful textures, as always, from Tom: a great distortion of reality, with a really sparkly train. I really like the lightning effects, and the recolouring adds a lot of interest. Classy.

A great film poster from GKB: excellent steam, good lettering (except you should never, ever use Old English in all caps!). Not entirely sure about the way Harry Potter and Snape blend into each other: the solution here is to compose them all in a group, then lower the opacity of the group as a whole. But absolutely, top marks for the fantastic reflection of the train in the water! It's been done with amazing precision and accuracy. Really convincing - it must have taken ages. And well worth a long overdue title for you, GKB. In the light of this week's entry, I think Magical Montagist best fits the bill. Excellent!

A great set of rails from michael sinclair, with excellent smoke and a great, well defined vanishing point. Some rather dodgy perspective distortion on the Hogwarts train, though: this one really needs to be split into its constituent parts in order to make it work. But what's this - a railroad with not a tree in sight? I know of a good source...

Always good to see elements from old Challenges surfacing once more - and Dek_101 has incorporated the bridge from a few weeks back. I do like the way the train is hovering, and the Muggles Beware sign is a neat touch on the post. The balloons bother me a little - scale? transparency? Something's not quite right there. A subtle distortion on the train, though.

Vibeke's train looks good in the outback - although there are stil some pieces of the original blue background visible in there. but - and you know how I hate to have to bring this up - watch the perspective!!! The lines of hte top and bottom of the train clearly point to the horizon! This really is important, you know. take another look at this one!

A graet ghostly image from Glen: the skull, the steam, and the overall colouring are really consistent. I'd say the train is a touch too big for the bridge! Love the steam coming out of the sides, that works really well.

Ozzy's train is a great piece of work in jwhite's entry: the recolouring is right in character. Some very weird perspectives going on here - but then, Ozzy Osbourne's a very weird person.

A really neat idea from BigVern: having the train coming out of a tunnel of Harry Potter books is a great solution. Again, though, watch the perspective: the board is at a very different angle from the train. But a good lightning effect, and I love the CD icon spinning out from the book. Hmm... is J K Rowling muscling in on the Photoshop market?

A truly gorgeous entry from Pierre, I'm sure you'll agree. It's the consistency of tone and lighting that really makes this one work, and it's an interesting lesson in restraint. Just because your computer has 16 million colours available, it doesn't mean you have to use them all! And Pierre's entry illustrates the point perfectly. Less is more!

Lovely work from Deborah Morley: the train smashing through snow sculptures has been perfectly realised, with excellent snow effects and great steam. A really refreshing take on the problem!

Excellent stuff all round. What a good week!

To explain the idea behind not blurring (the front end of) the train was that I tried to simulate the effect you get when you pan with your camera trying to follow a moving object. And when succeed in doing this the scenery (background) becomes blurred and the moving object is frozen and sharp.
