A very moody, mysterious shot from Whaler: talk about going off the rails! Intriguing foreground blur - but the train doesn't seem to be moving. Stuck on the points, perhaps? The added smoke in the second entry helps.

To explain the idea behind not blurring (the front end of) the train was that I tried to simulate the effect you get when you pan with your camera trying to follow a moving object. And when succeed in doing this the scenery (background) becomes blurred and the moving object is frozen and stands out sharply against the background.

Some excellent work here by everyone. I really enjoyed looking at them all this morning.

Sadly I didn't find time to participate......to much running around to appointments.....the highschool to watch my daughters play basketball and also spending time trying to get a handle on Corel Draw x3!

Gordon Congratulations on your new title.

Steve, Thank you for your kind and constructive comments; I will try and get a better perspective on my work in future!

Thank you also, Sophie. Your image made me laugh.

Dear All, I was wondering how long it takes other forum subscribers to produce their great pieces of work. As I am still a beginner at all this photoshopping it took me about 8-10 hours to create my image. I would expect that those more skilled have, in far far less time, produced work that is far far better. Would others like to say how long their work took to produce.

Vibeke's train looks good in the outback - although there are stil some pieces of the original blue background visible in there. but - and you know how I hate to have to bring this up - watch the perspective!!! The lines of hte top and bottom of the train clearly point to the horizon! This really is important, you know. take another look at this one!

I must learn to slow down, can't beleive I was caught by the perspective again. I was so busy buildning the rails.

Thanks again for commenting, Steve.

BigVern, in answer to your question, the time I spend on a Friday Challenge varies. It often takes me longer to think of an idea than to produce it! It's not unusual for me to actually begin working on a challenge in midweek. Having said that, your time of 8 - 10 hours for a complicated montage doesn't seem overly long to me.

As an example, the last challenge was unusual for me in that I got an idea of what I wanted to do almost straight away. I spent Friday evening thinking about it, a couple of hours on Saturday googling some images, and most of a pretty wet Sunday Photoshopping it together.

A good question, BigVern, and I hope some more forum members will reply, as I also would be interested to hear their comments.

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Vern I didn't have time for this weeks challenge but to answer your question.........it really all depends on what I'm doing. Sometimes thinking of an idea takes longer than doing, sometimes the idea comes quickly and the work takes a while. It really depends on how complex the image. Also some days the work just flows and seems to fall together wonderfully.........other times it's a struggle to get what you want. I don't really think there is a hard and fast answer on this one.

You will be able to work quicker the more familiar you are with photoshop so you will spend less time hunting for tools you need, but that doesn't necessarily mean you will get an image done in an hour as apposed to 8. I have spent days working on one image.

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Vern, my nightly train took about 2 hours to do... I already had the picture of the covered bridge and of the moon. It turned out that the locomotive was in the exact same perspective as the bridge. That save me a ton of time. I fliped the words on the train (didn't think of flipping the bridge; duh...) I played with the curves to switch colours, added some shades with a big soft brush to darken some areas (on a top layer that I embedded in the train, added a violet to transparent radial blend (that I made 40% opaque) and voilà!

The key was to have the good base images (luck here). I usually will spend about 4 to 6 hours on a Friday challenge, including the Googling... Yours required just about everything being constructed, so your duration seems normal to me! Welcome and above all, have fun doing this!

Wayne, Pauline and Pierre thank you for your interesting responses. It is useful to understand the thought processes and timescales of others. These challenges are already becoming quite addictive for me so knowing that the time I am taking is reasonable helps!

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Vern,
I must re-iterate what Pauline and Pierre have said.
The Harry Potter poster probably took about 4 - 5 hours of actual work (that includes going through my photo archive for the right background image) but thinking out what to do and how to do it probably took 2 trips around the M25 to work and a 1 hour dog walk.
Had I tried to do this 10 years ago it would have taken a lot longer 'cos I didn't know then what I know now.
The Bush/ Bin Laden/Blair image was 1 dog walk and then 4 hours - all before having a bath and shave before going to the theatre!

Keep at it,
Gordon

Big Vern,

The pictures I post here take many, many hours to complete.
First I am Imagniation challenged and It takes time to come up with something suitable, but I do not count those hours.
Searching for and manipulating photos to be used, and finaly combining them all takes me many hours of working with tools and filters. Yet when I finaly post, I always feel I should have done better.

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Gordon, funny you should mention dog walks as I often spend time on my dog walks thinking through the process of whatever I am working on also. I also get a lot of my ideas at night when I SHOULD be sleeping and can't get to sleep because the mind is going!

I guess we all have our own thought process and it's interesting to see how everyone approaches these challenges.

Great question Vern!

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Thanks for the comments Steve - I must hold my hands up that the "Stone Top Hat" was originally going to be just a normal one, but I couldn't find any photos of top hats with "open mouths", only this one which was a garden ornament made of textured cast iron and painted gloss black.

Vern - I too spend a lot of time on a Photoshop Document (too much time really), normally trying out different ideas and methods. The Cauldron this week probably took 12 - 16 hours in total, but over half that ended up in the recycle bin!

Re: Contest 119: The Hogwarts Express
Thank you Steve.

Vern - I usually take an age to think of anything remotely original. Some of my ideas so far have depended on what I found on google to start me off. This week, before the idea was even properly formed, I typed in 'stately home' as a starter image idea. When I saw the photo which I featured in my entry, it happily triggered the formation of the final image. Looking/thinking can take days. The execution, maybe 4-6 hours if I am *very* lucky. And sometimes lots more tinkering to no purpose after that...

And Steve probably has very few hours from start to finish to come up with a major montage!
