Challenge 1031: A curious fish
I noticed this fish tank on a recent visit to my doctor's surgery. I have no idea what kind of fish this is (perhaps the ichthyologists among you will enlighten me) but it struck me that it's posed as if it's trying to climb out of the tank.

Assuming this is the first stage in its evolutionary journey, can you show me how it might look once its descendants have grown legs? And how large might they become?

High res is here.

Loyd, this could be the moment when you create a flying fish!

Ha, I'll have to think about that one Mariner. Might be worth a go.

Well, I was going to try and not be first, but this went together much quicker and easier than I expected.

I posted this yesterday but it seems to have disappeared into the blue yonder!

I liked Mariner's idea and Loyd's set a good standard to follow.

Hope i've done it justice.

Nice one David.

I couldn't think of a fish with legs. Instead you get a bird with a fishy coat. Silly.

The webbed feet are terrific Loyd. Splendidly surreal Mariner and I always get a smile from your odd surprises Ant.

Re: Challenge 1031: A curious fish
Hundreds of years of global warming have caused the lakes to dry up. Their fish picked off by predators as their natural habitat disappeared.

This one species had a colouring and pattern that provided it with a natural camouflage sparing it from predators and allowing it to evolve and to adapt over the centuries to it's harsh new environment.

Sadly this unfortunate specimen has come face to face with an adversary with millennia of surviving harsh environments and is probably about to discover the unforgiving side of nature.

Strangely the hardest part of this was not the creation of a new species but the simple creation of hard shadows for the two adversaries to match the direction and colour of the existing background shadows. Not quite there, but they pass muster.

Aha! He caught him!!

That's lovely Michael. I especially like the way the eagles wing movements are reflected in the entire body but, truth to tell, I do find the different lengths of the eagle's leg's keeps popping out at me.

Fun stuff Mariner, Ant, David and Michael...

I had three more ready to go, but they pale in comparison... now I must go back and rethink everything.

Optical illusion about the legs David: here is the untouched original which explains things better:

Well I'll be damned! As you say, it's completely legit. Funny thing is, even knowing that, I still see him looking compellingly peg legged in the first image with the flying fish. Fascinating how our eyes deceive us sometimes.
